Since Galactica has reccommended using TDK 2x media,
has anyone found these in bulk at a good price online?
My local Target has these in 10 packs for like $17,
but I'd like to get 25 or 50 on a spindle.

Staples recently was having sales on this media at about $1 each. I bought a couple 25 packs for under $50. Don't know if they still have a supply or are running those sales.

  3. Hi..
Be careful with the TDK 2x DVD-r media and your mac. My wife and an Imac with the superdrive made by pioner. I believe it is the A04 model. When I tried to use the media I got a callibration error and could not use it. I could use it fine on my Sony 500 and Liteon 411 and 451 drives fine.
Just a little heads up. I had found other posts where other mac users had similiar problems with this exact media. Just might want to borrow one and test before buying in bulk.

I'll pick up a few singles and test this weekend, oh mighty one!
Thanks all for the tips---Since I'm a buy.com regular, I'll keep an eye
    on them....

  6. The only problem I've had with TDK media is when I backed up the Sopranos. For some reason, the TDK media would not record the last episode of each disc correctly. The burnt disc would play fine on my dvd player but would not play the last episode on each disc.

So I backed up the Sopranos using a different brand of dvd media and it worked flawlessly. Never used TDK since. BTW, used a G4 933 with a stock dvdr drive.

    icoty,
    what type of "other media"
    was it?

    I have used:

Apple ( expensive, but not a single problem)
    Imation ( expensive, ok)
CompUSA ( complete burns, but after storing, disks tend to error out
and pixalate bad towards end of burn)
Memorex ( incompatible with home player)
Be-ALL ( was great, but I'm getting so far out of a 25 spindle 2 bad)
    Fuji ( i'm testing now.)

Galactica suggested TDK, a friend swears by Pio ( because it's
made by Pioneer), and I'd goback to Apple, but its expensive.
So anybody with some good brands that work for them,
besides TDK, feel free to speak up!

  8. I hate to jump on an old bandwagon, but I swear by Ritek. I have heard that their quality has gone down over time, but that has not been my experience. My burns verify about 39 times out of 40, at 4X from a Pioneer 105.

I've also had consistently good results with white-printable media. For an extra $5 per 100 dvd-r's, it's well worth the money in my experience in terms of reliability. I have no idea why. Riteks that are not white-printable are about twice as prone to failure.

Taiyo Yuden is the best and it is a 4x DVD-R disc.

Never ever had a problem with Taiyo Yuden. They are worth the extra bit you spend on them.

    what about PioData?
My boss says they should be great, because they are made
by Pioneer, and working with an SD they should be flawless...?

I went to Staples today...TDK was tooo expensive for my blood.
I also checked CHUMPUSA, and TDK was like $11 for a four pack.
They both had no singles that I could try out.

    Dealmac has a listing on the PioData's ( 25 for $27 shipped)
so I f I hear favorable, I may go that route...

You can buy Taiyo Yuden's direct from RIMA.COM for something like $85.00 for a 50 pack.

That is $1.70 each but trust me you can do no better and much much worse when it comes to brand's of DVD media.

This is the digital world where no flaws are acceptable. This ain't videotape.

    No Costco's here...OKC, OK.
Target has TDK at 20 for $25.00, or
    $1.25 a disc, while ESBUy.com has PioData
    25 for $27 shipped, or $1.08 a disc.

I'll pick both up, and see what happens.
If nothing else, I know I can use both for data backups
with ease ( staying under the 4 GB limit).

Be careful with the Piodata if you have an older external burner. The Piodata discs are 4x, and I can't find a Mac firmware updater for my drive. I have to be sure to buy 2x media or risk ruining my drive...

  15. Yeah, I've been using the Riteks on a superdrive a05 for a month now (the $.80/disc won me over)

no problems, except that they're 1x.

wow, according to the website, they're Grade A!!! I must have been making the right choice.

I also use TDK 2x w/o problems, but I had some Memorex that errored out 3/4 of the time.

  17. I bot a pack 100 of TDK 2x at BestBuy for $99 a few weeks ago. I think that was 1/2 price. Don't know how frequently they have deals like that but you can always check the paper. I'm always seeing sales for media.

I've read good reports about CompUSA 1x disks. Tried a few and were OK with me.

Seems that Media can be bot on sale at prices similar to On-line purchases. And if you buy a large enough quanity, it should hold you for long enough so you can check the papers weekly for sales.

I have $100.00 that says your 100 pack of TDK discs say MADE IN TAIWAN instead of MADE IN JAPAN on 'em.

When people say that TDK is a good brand they are usually talking about the DVD-R discs that say MADE IN JAPAN on the package.

TDK packages that say MADE IN TAIWAN is a whole another thing.

Yep, the TDK DVD-R 25-packs I bought at Staples for $1 each are made in Taiwan. Haven't tried them yet. Once again, we get what we pay for... and we never learn.

Are Taiwanese plants still deficient? They've been making DVDs for years now, you'd think they'd be better.

Originally I only used Apple DVD-R because they were labeled Made in Japan, but on my last batch of 2x discs (which I now cannot find for sale anywhere on store.apple.com), they weren't marked Made In 'Anywhere'.

same on the ones I bought at Target---Made in Taiwan.

I'd like to buy in bulk ( thus getting .80¢ a disc), but the ol'
CC never seems to be free enough to justify the charge...

perhaps if I stop my netflix, xrentdvd, itunes music store, and
medical bill payments from coming off there, I might be able to swing that....

Stay away from CompUSA 1x discs...I know, I know I'm one of the ones
who reported "They're great, no problems!" and now six months later,
with egg on my very red face, I'm having to re-backup my backups
made on these due to the media going bad after burning.
Just ask Galactica or check out any post were I ate crow for buying these cheap, cheap, cheap discs.
    :-p

I got a friend on the north side who's just got into DVD burning..
he went with PioData's also after how someone told him how
good they were...he's burned 20 out of 50 and has gotten half of those
to error out in his Phillips home player. Even though he's on a PC
using a Cendyne DVD burner, I told him about the TDK's, as well
as the Apple and BeAll's I'm currently using, so I'm using him as
another beta tester for these TDK's.

As for buying locally...Never if I can help it.
We only have Target, Wal-Mart, Sam's, BB and CompUSA here ( big chains)
and smaller mom and pop's that charge you 200% markup over Internet
prices ( sort of a surcharge for buying it on the web for you).
Sam's and Wal-mart never have anything but Memorex on sale,
and I heard they suck in ASD's. BB and Comp are king of Rebates,
and I can't do rebates ( for reasons above), so it's gotta be best price
or nadda. Target is good when they put stuff on sale, but media
seems to be bad media, good media, none, bad media, good media,
    none.
(like last week was Memorex, this week is TDK.
Next it will be Memorex again, then no media offered for sale)

Online is best....Free shipping, no tax ( screw use tax)
and some really good vendors. EsBuy.com, Meritiline.com,
shop4tech.com....just fewer sales on less than SUPER bulk media
    ( 100 or more).

I was also given a Fuji branded DVD-R and an Imation DVD-R
(for free by someone who needed +R). The Fuji seems to be ok,
I backed up Runaway Jury I bought at Wal-Mart, it played fine
in the settop. Will use the Imation this weekend.

    @terryj

I had a run in with some bad DVD-R discs ... had read errors ... problems playing ... etc.

    In short a big NIGHTMARE

Sounds like you have been through that as well.

So ... your best bet for BEST media at the BEST price is to buy Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R discs direct from RIMA.COM

    You can buy 50 for $1.60 each or a total of $80.00 + S&H
    You can buy 100 for $1.55 each or a total of $155.00 + S&H

That's about as cheap as you are gonna find QUALITY media

You will never get top quality at $1.00 or less per DVD-R disc. At least not in this day and age.

Of course it wasn't that long ago that the RIMA price was for the Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R discs were close to $2.00 per disc so things are comming down in price over time.

Just last week they were about 10 cents more than they are now (the price I quoted ... just looked at their website. So it is current.)

    Fulci,
    thanks for the heads up.
I'm gonna start saving my pennies now for when I run through this 20 pack of TDK's, I'll give the Ritek's a try. OF course a quick aside...
since I got an ao4 SD, top speed I'll get with 4x discs are 1x at best.
    Does Taiyo make 2x discs..?
I'll go check the website now.

Bingo! The package says "Made in Taiwan".
How would you like that. In small unmarked bills? Although I must say I haven't had a problem with them yet (used about 10 so far).

    LOL

Well they might still be A-OK

My guess is that they are either Ritek G03 or maybe even Ritek G04

Not the end of the world.

But I still prefer DVD-R discs that are MADE IN JAPAN no matter what brand although I am partial to Tiayo Yuden.

Ok, burned two projects today with the TDKs.
Quite happy when I saw both projects, which normally would have
taken 49 minutes in Toast 6, show up as having 22 minutes or less!

So I see I'm gonna have to stick with these discs for a bit...

    Also, heads up:
Best Buy has these 25 for $25 dollars( instant rebate, no mail in).

Will make the trek tomorrow and get a couple of spindles.

FYI I have spoken directly to Pioneer USA and they say they have no relationship with Piodata and that Pioneer does not make Piodata discs.

    Additional info here:

ADDED: I might have to change my opinion; I just received a sample Piodata DVD-R 8X and it is identified as TY G02.
