im pretty sure you are allowed to make a backup of anything you own
but are not allowed to give or lend it to anyone
my question is
is it legal to download a movie that you own on dvd/vhs if you cant be bothered to back it up yourself

the backup question is debatable, at least in the US, but downloading it, except from a movie company, is illegal - regardless of any right you have to back it up, the agency putting it up for download doesn't have distribution rights.Originally Posted by hhhhbk- housepig

The quality of downloads would never match the quality of a ripped backup.Originally Posted by hhhhbk
Why anyone would download a 600mb version of a 8gb DVD and call it a backup is beyond me.

1) cds are 700mb so why make a 600Mb ripThe quality of downloads would never match the quality of a ripped backup.

2) most 1hr 30min - 2 hr dvds are 3-4GB in the first place
3) the main purpose of this site is to create avis, vcds and svcds so i dont really get the point that your trying to make
if this sites only purpose was to teach you how to use a program like dvd decryptor to rip the vobs then use nero to burn it using a dvd writer i would understand what you were trying to get at
just face it pal YOU GOT PUNKED!!!

thanks hhhh,

"YOU GOT PUNKED"

A personal backup is probably okay for most things. There are legal grey areas involved in HOW you do it... particularly for things like breaking CSS.Originally Posted by hhhhbk
No. Just like it isn't legal to go to the DVD store and steal a second copy of that DVD you can't be bothered backing up either...my question is

1) I was generalising and in any case, you were talking about downloading a shitty quality version of a DVD movie. You don't get to choose what size the downloaded file is.Originally Posted by hhhhbk
2) I was referring to the original DVD size.
Again, I was generalising
3) Bollocks, and no, I'm not suprised you don't get my point.
You missed it entirely.
If you come here and ask if it's okay to download a file instead of ripping it what's the size got to tdo with it?
Punked?
Erm, yes, punked, good one.
Please, feel free to continue to skirt around the fact you're copying movies illegal.
You might possibly have just won the award for the most lame argument I've ever heard.
I take that back.Originally Posted by Will Hay

If someone lives on the U.S. is generally allowed to make a backup of your own DVD. You can also legally borrow the original DVD to your friend as long as isn't for profit. However, not the backup copy to the friend as this is illegal.
The second question, it is illegal to download a movie, even you own the same movie on DVD.I am a computer and movie addict -
thought i would put somethin in quotes cause everybody else was doin it

In the US...by statute you can make 1 backup of any pc software you own. By statute and caselaw interpretation, you can backup television broadcasts to view at a later date.
That's it. There is no defined right to backup a commercial audio cd, DVD, or even VHS tape. Could these be considered Fair Use rights, and thus legal under our existing Fair Use laws? Well that's the argument and most people seem to think so. But until a high court rules on it or Congress passes further legislation on the issue, its anybody's guess. The way things are going, we may not have to wait too much longer.
This is seriously like the 20th post on this subject in the last few weeks. I don't know why we keep talking about this. -

I've been through all this before and of course you can make a backup of your own original DVD or VHS movie as per existing fair use.
It is legal as on non-commerical personal use.
I don't care what the U.S. courts says on DVD copying as this is a grey area.
