somewhere inbetween doing school, pc games, and school...i had a thought, when dual layer dvd burners come out and get popular...there will be no challenge, i mean like there will be some program (probably some version of dvdshrink) that will do a direct copy, and thats it....no compressing or anything. of course we always have HD to look forward to, heh, but that could be awhile (as far as burning goes). anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

  2. I am sure you are right it will simply be point and click copy. Copying DVD's holds no challenge for me now as I simply dont do it. The reason I use this site is mainly for home movie conversion to DVD, so anything that can sway the bias of the posts in this forum back to that area is a good thing IMO. There are too many people who think this site is here just for help on ripping off DVD's.

  4. As I have mentioned in a previous post quite a while back, I have only ever backed up one DVD to VCD, and that was just to learn the process. The DVD was Hannibal when it first came out so that will tell you how long ago it was.

Yeah its gonna get real easy. But then people still bad burn disc, have problems with their burners, and frankly want to do all sorts of nonstandard thing, so I doubt the forums will "die out or anything" it will simply goto its next incarnation... meaning likely lean more the DV video discussion and prepair for HD DVD.

I noticed I don't backup as much anymore. Mostly now its just experimenting with some things. I got a simpsons episode encoded to xvid at 12 fps and it came out fantastic. Now I just convert some old home movies and videotapes that are not on dvd to dvd.

To thos whose entire knowledge of and interest in digital video is the 'backing up' of commercial DVD's that may well be the case. And indeed the number of posts surrounding DVD backups is quite high. But take take a look at the rest of the forum, the capture forum is always busy and there are still loads of posts (in various forums) with regard to converting home videos, different mpeg encoders, DVD authoring issues (of home movies) etc. Digital video and dvdrhelp.com has a lot more areas of interest than just 'backing up' commercial DVD's. Plenty of challenges with existing equipment and materials never mind HD and other new technologies coming anytime soon!.

I predict there will be a bunch of media problem posts. We'll now have layer issues with the cheaper media, and the speed issues, and the edge issues ......

the subject lines will be the same:

    Help Me

    I have a problem

    This is an interestin problem

but no doubt you'll get people who wanna burn the whole disk onto the bottom ( or top ) layer cause thats the layer that most players can read properly.

or they want to read the bottom layer and burn to the top layer and vicky versa

or they wanna shrink LOTR 1 onto the bottom layer and LOTR 2 on the top layer

and can i secure a layer

You can secure both layers at once. Take your 1/4 inch sharpie and do some calligraphic titling, but do it on the nice shiny side. Be real hard to rip your "Personal Backup" that way.

I got tired of the VCD-SVCD thing a long time ago. Now am into DVD, site is more useful, again.

Baldrick has a damn good site, you may speak your mind (So long as you don't get into my pet subject) and no one is gonna crunch you, on the admin side. Some of the jerks will, but what the hell. The only ones that traumatizes are the young who have never been spoken to harshly. "My little sweetie-dinkums" ala Harry Potter. (That's Dudley, not Harry.)

The most of us will tell the ******** to fuckoff if they get too abusive, then when they cry to the mods, the mods generally tell them they should clean up their act.. Hey, it's give and take. You can't take it, don't try giving it.

There is a hell of a lot more here than "How do I rip a DVD-9, and get it on one DVD-5?" Computer, capture, convert a cap, go to the index. It's all there. Don't just go to the Topics you used to need larnin' on, and say "But, I know it all." We had a youngster, Cecilio, who said he knew it all after a couple months, and he was sharp, but, not "ALL". Haven't seen his sig for many moons. He DID get a lotta crap from some who said since he learned it all here, any money he made should be thrown in a pool and anyone who posted in one of his threads should get a cut. That is basically what they said, tho' not in those words. "We gave of our immense intellect, freely, and for you to make money from it is unfair to us"..

It is, and most likely will continue to be a useful site. Baldrick's a Swede, and they're supposed to be hardheaded, but he seems to be able to swing with the tide. This is the popular thing now? New Forum. Not, No, we only discuss 5 1/4 inch floppies here. Go somewhere else if you want to talk about that new fangled 3.5 inch format. It will never catch on anyhow. Too big an installed base.

I think I'llbe here in the next 5 years or more, so long as he can make enough to pay for his throughput. And, a few bucks as a donation probably would not break anyone but the student body. I haven't my own self, but will soon.

    Hey, I like it here.

    Cheers,

    George

  13. Very well spoken gmatov....very well indeed.

I agree with what you say. I love this place as well and everyone here has their unique traits. Sure we get on each other some of the time but we keep coming back because we know that most of the time its half hearted and we are just messing with each other.

It's a nice place to interact with one another and get different opinions and views on a wide variety of topics. Hell I would say that 95% of my posts are on the off-topic forum........but that doesnt mean I don't try to help whenever I can. Usually it is somewhere on this wonderful board already.

Great job with the board Baldrick and hopefully we will all be here for many many more years to come.

As for the donating.............gmatov gave me an excuse......student. Heheheh. But don't worry, only 24 more credits left and then I donate 35% of all my paychecks to the all knowing and loving Baldrick.

gmatov - very true and accurate words.

    Last year on irc:
someone asked question related to dvd ripping, got reply:
    "go check guides on dvdRIPhelp.com"
    then someone else added:
"you mean dvdrhelp.com, but thats what R in the address stands for anyway"

Sometimes stabbing isn't enough. Sometimes it would be nice to use Indolikaa's peace machine across the 'net.

Here's a question that will come up at sometime or another:

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

A lot of the fun and learning stopped when programs like DVD2ONE became available - things just haven't been the same since. But I agree with Will that capturing still holds a great attraction (so many great things on VHS but not on DVD) and this site is a great source of information for it.

I've started going back to (S)VCD to distribute short clips that wouldn't be worth putting on a DVD (BMW films), and re-learned what I have forgotten.

This site will still be going strong in years to come, even if it will be full of posts like 'Which is the best.....', 'How do I rip a DVD', or the more technically challenging 'How do I wipe my nose'.

    Long live vcdhelp.com!

(yeah, I know it's now dvdrhelp, but it was vcdhelp when I joined and will always be that to me )
    Regards,

    Rob
