2 - As per Russ, and colours look "cleaner".

    1) Looks slightly soft
    2) Looks slightly hard

If you look at the detal on the outside of his right arm sleeve, you see stepping in 2).

    I'd go for 1)

    Cap 1.
Cap 2 really mucked up that flying object at the top - a flag flapping? It also looks like the sharpen was applied too heavily. And like rhegedus mentioned, there is "pixelation" on the sleeve. I also think a slightly too soft pic looks better than a slightly too hard pic.

They both are good caps, but I think cap 2 is sharper and has more detail. I also agree that cap 2 screwed up the object at the top.

But the problem with comparing pics on this site is that you are limited to only 50k per image. This necessitates reducing the image to a constant "muddled" resolution.

    Neither, it's an invalid question.

The question is which one looks best on your TV?

JPEG's of screenshots of a computer displayed version of something for a TV just can't give you an accurate comparison. I've see lousy screen shots look great on a TV and great screen shots look terrible on a TV.

I disagree. The question is "which one do you like better ...and why?". There was no mention of a TV. And if you're comparing them both on the same monitor, it's a valid question since there are many differences between them.

  9. Cap 1 - more blured
Cap 2 - Looks clearer and more detailed.

They can't give you an absolute quality analysis but they can make a good *comparative* analysis.

  11. Cap 2 - because I feel like there is more detail to the background

but then again, it depends on everyone's monitor settings, the jpeg compression algorithm...etc

Thanks for the replies, folks. Let me explain some of what is going on. These images where both captured with the same capture card, but different VCRs.

Both captures were fed through a Sima Color Corrector, which unfortunately adds a third variable (but avoids MV issues). I'm not going to say which capture came from which VCR yet, but I will say that one VCR definitely gives a somewhat sharper picture, but without as much color saturation. The other gives a somewhat softer picture with less detail, but more color saturation and tends towards a "warmer" picture.

I haven't decided which I like better myself, but was interested in what other folks thought and why - just in case I am missing some points that I ought to consider.

I haven't tried burning and testing on my stand-alone DVD player and TV yet. I haven't gotten that far in the process. Anyway, I'd still like more opinions and reasons...so keep them coming.

I dropped both pics into my paint prog and magnified the face area. Neither one are great but pic 2 loses more features. The right eye (from the subjects perspective) is gone and the right eyebrow has a white stripe in it. The lips have no shape and the nose is poorly defined as is also the neck area. Picture 1 has what looks like interlace lines but the features although not great are still better defined.

Funny thing is that in normal view pic 2 looks clearer but when magnified pic 1 looks to have more accurate detail in the face area.

    Cap 1 is true.
Cap 2 has some sort of fake sharpening effect going on. It botched up the motion and it has some artifacts from the sharpening effect, notably on the feautres on the face.

Both will appear to have the same sharpness on a tv.

But a still image can be a bad representation, as can the JPEG compression on the still image here. I'd insist on uncompressed BMP at minimum for a question like this..

Plus the capture card and software plays a big hand in this.

The first capture is better. But that could change at the drop of a hat.
