I am new to this forum and it looks like many of you have a great knowledge in video. I just made my first conversion from D8 to DVD last night. I am using my Sony D8 to also input my 8mm tapes. I have about 45 more tapes to go . I also have some VHS tapes that I want to put to DVD and I want to know what is the best way to get it into my computer for the final process. I have an AMD 3000+, 512 RAM, and 160 GB HD and I am using Ulead Video Studio 7. I was looking at some video capturing devices online and they all have different capturing modes. I know that DVD is 720 x 480 but should I use that same resolution to capture VHS? I would like to buy the right equipment without breaking the wallet.

  2. I'm guessing your DV cam doesn't have any sort of 'pass-through' function to it?

I have a Sony Digital 8 camera, and on the side are 3 RCA ports, as well as S-video and standard audio jacks. I output from the VCR to the camera, and then into the computer- the camera converts the signal to a DV stream for me, and that's how it's captured in the program I'm using (FCP).

Of course, you don't get a time code or the ability to control the VCR's controls through the computer, but it's a small price to pay...

The ATI AIW cards come with capture devices that allow you to import analog signals, and there's several video 'bridges', which basically have 3 RCA ports on one end and a FW cable on the other...
