  1. Hi all -

Strange problem I'm having. I have a few AVIs using various codecs - Cinepak & DiVX mainly. Procoder gives me the following error:

    'An Unknown Error Occured'.

Gee - that's clear. It doesn't matter what sort of AVI I drop into the app. I get that error message. MOV & MPEG are all fine.

Anybody know how to fix this?

    Thanks

  2. Remove and reinstall Procoder.

I can get that too on corrupt files. Remember, Procoder is older than DIVX and all those download formats.

Sometimes a simple reboot is all that is needed. It may be the Windows codecs are fubared temporarily.

ProCoder can sometimes "choke" on AVIs with VBR MP3 audio. Use GSpot to see if the audio is VBR prior to starting the conversion process.

Extract the audio and re-mux same audio as Constant BitRate.

    Hope that helps

  5. K - I've definitely uninstalled/re-installed more than once and it hasn't changed a thing. I always go through at least the basics before posting questions like this.

I have a feeling that it may actually be the Win codecs having the problem. Something like Windows Media Player on my box is virtually useless. It really doesn't play anything other than compliant mpgs. It's real hit & miss with it at the moment.

Certainly SOME of these AVIs have VBR. I can see how that affects things.

I'm going to try cleaning house with the system a bit and see what happens. I'll post a followup.

Thanks for the tidbits of info. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has had this happen. When you guys had your problems, did you get the same error message?

  6. This being the noob forum, and not knowing how much experience anyone has, it's difficult to suggest a fix, when it's not known if one had already tried something. Not trying to insult anyone
Anyhow, I found codec incompatibilties, and ended up with the zoom player, removing most unknown, and a few duplicate codecs, then reinstalling the WMP9 codec pack from MS, and the Kristal codec pack.
This solved most of the problems with various tools, including encoders.
One .avi always gave me problems, and after much hair pulling, I found that it was encoded in an older xvid version, at 14.985fps (half NTSC), and did indeed have vbr audio. Vdubmod sorted it out quickly, as GorbyDeath has mentioned.
