The easiest way to speed up the audio and keep it in sync is to get the wav file virualdub extracts and load into goldwave and stretch audio using 104.271% for ntsc to pal.

I handled the audio separately, doing a 29.97 --> 25fps conversion with BeSweet. All these efforts have failed.
    BINGO !!!

The problem is the audio conversion.

You need to use NTSC (23.976fps) to PAL (25fps)

You are using 29.970fps instead of 23.976fps ... hence the problem.

Actually, I've done this. Extracted the audio with VirtualDUB to wav and converted to 25fps (from 23.976) as well as demuxed the AC3 and converted to wav with BeSweet both with fps conversion and without.

The root problem I have is the following:

Even if I convert the audio to wav without fps conversion, it won't sync properly with the video converted to 23.976fps.

Opening the video with VirtualDUB, gives a duration of 34 minutes at 29.976 fps and 62182 frames.
Obviously, the duration is incorrect as it is a 44 min episode.

However, the 62182 frames is a correct frame count for 43 minutes episode. So, converting the frame rate of the video to 23.976 and combining with the 23.976 fps audio as converted by Besweet without any fps conversion should give proper playback at 23.976fps. It doesn't.

The best approximation is to give audio a 1200msec delay and convert framerate to 24.93fps. This gives good sync for audio at the beginning and the end of the video, but in the middle (about 25 minutes) off-sync is about 1 second.

I am guessing that the reason is something to do with IVTC but even trying this gives worse results.

I have tried this with two separate DVD. Alias Season 3 and Star Trek TNG both in NTSC format.

    Any guesses?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Sounds like theres a point where the audio goes out of sync more than once so you have to look for that spot.

  4. For any standards conversion you could try Dynapel's Motion Perfect software, but it only accepts AVI.The motion is extremely smooth.I use it quite often.

This method either drops and/or adds frames to do the conversion.

    That is unacceptable.

The easiest method that is about as close-to-perfect as you can get is using DGPulldown.

Also this thread was more about NTSC to PAL than the other way around.

Exactly. And it is also for those that use very rare that type of convertions
