  1. I have a Maxtor hard drive that I want to put in an enclosure...

On this site, they have enclosures for 5 1/4" drives (standard CDROM/DVDROM drive form factors). They also have enclosures for 2.5" and 3.5" drives. Are the 2.5" size for the tiny drives used in primarily laptops and the 3.5" size for the standard hard drives in desktops? My Maxtor hard drive is from my old desktop computer too. I could be right, I just have a habit of second-guessing myself.

Yes. I have one of these.... A friend took an old laptop with a 40gig drive apart and put it in a case that can hold either a 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 inch drive. It's pretty sweet. (although I haven't used it in a while.... no need since I transfer everything over the network now)

just talked to my bud on that drive... he said that the enclosure only held 2 1/2 inch drives.... the connector is different than the IDE connector on the 3 1/2 inch HD's in PC's (DOH! - I knew that!)

I've got an external IDE enclosure with firewire and USB. I think I paid $50 for it at Computer Geeks. For 2 years I've been using it for my DVD burner so I can use it with my laptop (has firewire). At times I've put in a 3.5" IBM IDE HD and it seems to work fine - just like it was on the internal IDE cable
