  5. I don't know if your year is set in stone, but the 70's would make a much better presentation for movies in my opinion. Great decade for film. You've got Animal House, Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and lots of other major names. I consider it the begining of modern films.

If you can fudge just one year, Disney's "The Jungle Book" was a 1967 film.

EDIT: Here is a list of the 1966 Oscar winners/nominees if that helps

I'm taking a wild guess that the reason 1966 is being the selected year, is that it was a starting point in Hollywood where films were no longer under the strict moral Hayes Code (and no longer suppressed by conservatives and the Catholic Church - both playing a strong role in what type of films got produced during the mid '30s - mid '60s)

The New Wave of Euopean Cinema during the '50s and '60s were heavily influencing American filmmakers of that period, and with the many dramitic changes taking place in American Society at that time were starting to be reflected on film.

The films produced between 1965 and 1977 are among the most daring, important and creative achievements in movie history.
Star Wars can be blamed as the starting point where Cinema was killed off by greed and props to make the typical formula features.
It's also the marking point where art was once again suffering suppression from conservative support groups and commercial politics.

Fortunately, we still have the Independent market and film festivals to keep some of that creativity alive.

I don't want to really highjack the thread too much, but if that is why 1966 was chosen, a opposing point of view would be nice. I would argue this is a good thing.

Films were being marketed to the masses instead of a select audience. It allowed for film to make more money and thus not just provide entertainment, but fuel the economy. With big budget pictures being made, money inevitably is spent on a variety of services such as prop making and catering for the cast and crew. Also, this created a demand for better technology to film and record the movie, promoting research in sound development and video processing. And of course, all this creates jobs.

IMO, the art of the film was not hurt, it has only changed. Just as every art form, it only is a masterpiece if it was released at the proper moment in time. I believe if Michelangelo had sculpted "David" today, it would not have been considered a great work. It is considered a great sculpture because of the near perfect proportions of his body. However with today’s tools, it would not be difficult to create such perfect proportions.

That is true, but how much a film grosses or costs to make does not equate quality or longevity nor art merit.

Star Wars can be credited to revolutionizing technology, but that doesn't equate greatness in art.

That Hollywood has the money to advertise, distribute and dominate the Industry with their films does not make their films better - just widely known or seen.

All I can say to that is try to recreate The Great Pyramid of Giza today - even modern science is challenged.

Just two different perspectives on this subject - you are entitled to see it your way
