  1. What's the best way to capture closed captions? I want to capture the closed captions to a text file. Can it be done in Virtual Dub? Do you also have to capture video just to get the closed captions?

  2. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that nobody here knows how to capture closed captions to a text file.

  3. It has to be supported by the capture hardware and then most likely the capture program it comes with will let you capture CC to text. I know that my radeon VIVO will do just that with the ATI software only though.

  4. Okay, I have an ATI TV Wonder VE, which supports CC, but I could not make it work. Does it only work on live broadcasts? Seems like it should work the same with a VHS recording with CC. I also noticed a CC option in Virtual Dub, but it did nothing as far as I can tell.

  5. I have been looking for a means to capture closed captions to a time-stamped text file for a long time now. So far, no real luck. You can definitely create a transcript of CC by using the ATI TV player with your TV Tuner card. However, if you want to use this to caption a captured avi, it's totally useless as there is no time-markings within the text file. Thus far, the only solution I have found is to capture the CC as a separate avi, then use Premiere to layover the CC avi over the captured video. This works, but it is a giant pain in the ass. If there was only a way to convert TV/VHS CC to a subtitle-type file, it would be excellent. You can parse the CC file from a DVD into a time-marked subtitle file, but I haven't yet found a way to do the same for TV/VHS CC data files.

If you guys come across any way or have any good ideas, I'd love to hear about it.
