  1. I'm looking for any software tools that can check if your mpg (or dat) file is VCD 2.0 complaint.

Something akin to cdmage which checks .bin files for any errors.

So far, here is what I have found:

    1) VCDGear, you can use the -mpg2mpg -fix option and see if it detects/corrects any bad frames. The downside is that your hdd will be churning away for a few minutes. Usually if there are no bad frames, the output file will be identical to the input file (byte for byte).

    2) Nero, when you add a mpeg file, it'll tell you if it's complaint. However I don't know how robust or strict nero is with the VCD 2.0 standard. It does seem Nero is very picky. But if it passes this, it usually is a good mpeg for VCD.

    3) Virtual Dub. If you can load the mpeg, it probably is a valid VCD file (assuming correct audio and video bitrate).

    4) MS Media Player 6.4. I try and fast forward to different parts of the mpeg. Usually it plays smooth. There are occasional troublesome MPEGs that get STUCK when I ff around. These mpegs usually need fixing with VCDGear.

Usually #1 is the most strict test, however I really don't like to check every mpeg that way (unneccessary wear and tear on my hdd). Are there any software that has a simple 'check' feature?

You can use Teco's Bitrate Viewer http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm
This shows the bitrate flag of the file, resolution, VBV size and other things.

You can Mediaware Solutions M2 edit to open the file, then display info such as GOP, bitrate and other things
    http://www.mediawaresolutions.com/M2-edit.html

    Also Mpeg Properties http://www.medialab.se/mpgp_100.zip

And Mpeg Sequence maker, Display options will show basic info, clicking on console show some good info to. http://www.vcdhelp.com/MPEGSequenceMakerv02.zip

You'll have to know what the spec for 2.0 is in order to decide if your streams meet the requirement for compliance or not.

  3. Something akin to when you add the file to nero except in Adaptec 5.0. It does an automatic check and comes back if any part of the file is not VCD compliant.

  4. There's a program called Phillip's SVCD Verifier, but it only runs under Windows NT/2000, but it tests compliance. However, be warned - it is EXTREMELY picky.

  5. Yeah, a lot of folks have found that Philip's software demands absolute compliance. That's understandable, considering they created many of the CD standards in use today.

Where can we find/download SVCD Verifier?
