  1. Hi Guys,
I wonder if somebody could push me in the right direction please.
I have recently purchased a NEC 2500a DVD Writer and proceeded to back-up one of my sons DVD's.

The burn process went great and the film plays fine on my standalone DVD.

However for some reason the DVD-Rom I have in my PC (Liteon LTD165H) doesn't seem to recognise the DVD Back-up.

It seems to be trying to read the disc but doesn't do anything else and just sits there spinning.
The DVD Rom plays originals fine.

Is this a DVD Rom that will not play back-ups or do I need to change the firmware or settings somewhere.

    Thanks for any advise given.

    Regards Ron

  2. What did you back it up onto +R or +RW ?
I had the same problem found out that my DVD Rom would only playback
-R disks because of the age I think

I have a Liteon 163D in one computer and a Liteon 166 in another. The 163 will reads disks written with my year-oldSony writer but won't read disk written by my new Liteon writer. The newer 166 reads everything.

I don't know if there's a firmware update- I checked Liteon's website when I first discovered the problem and didn't find anything.

So I think the problem is that some older DVD-ROMs won't read disks written by some newer DVD writers.

I just ordered another 166 from newegg to take care of the problem.

  4. It was actually burned onto a Minus format disc.
I initially thought that this might of being the case but obviously the other way around.

That is: Able to play the Plus format and not the minus.

    Thanks for the reply though.

I have an older(3 year?) DVDROM drive that rips at 8x, but won't read anything I burn. I have a new (1 year old) DVDROM drive that reads anything I burn, but only rips at 2x. What's a guy to do?

Check and be sure DMA is enabled on the newer drive.

If it's a new DVD ROM and will only read at 2X, I think I'd return it if I couldn't figure out why.

    Hi giffordr82

I have exactly the model Dvd drive (lite-on LTD165H) as you.

my drive is capable of playing any type of disk, be it dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r, dvd+rw, dvd-ram, dvd-rom, cd, etc. never had a problem playing any burned dvd+-r disks.

so i suppose, the problem must lie elsewhere and not with the dvd drive.

ensure you are using the lastest firmware, (im using CH12, can be downloaded from the lite-on website)

    enable DMA mode

try cleaning the drive using a dvd lens cleaner disk (maybe your drive has collected dust)

I'd looked on the Lite-On website for firmware before I bought a new drive. I couldn't find any upgrades for DVD-ROMs- only DVD burners. Today I looked at the paperwork that came with the new drive and found the website for the DVD-ROM upgrades. It's not http://www.liteon.com, it's http://www.jlms-dvd.com/

  9. Hi Guys
Again thank you for your responses.

I'm not that clued up on firmware etc so you will have to be patient with me.

I've checked the firmware and the version I have is CHOJ.

I've looked at the site suggested above and the download is for CH12 firware.

Does this make any difference or are they just updates with a different naming convention?

As I say Thanks for the help and sorry if these questions sound a bit dumb.

    Regards

    Ron

Firmware is the programming that's actually in the drive.

CH12 is more recent than CH0J.

    > Does this make any difference or are they just updates with a different naming convention?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Does what make a difference? They're two different updates- one is more recent that the other. The more current firmware could solve your problem.

  11. Gents,
Thank's for your responses I have updated the Firmware on my player and hey presto I can now play back up copies of DVD's.

I thought that as the names were different in the firmware it meant they were for a different version of the DVD drive (ie a newer model).
But obviously this isn't the case as it has worked.

    Once again thank's a lot.

    Ron
