In what format are your subs? I use .ssa subs and the subtitler filter, that I apply first in the filter chain (or at least before doing any resizing).

Load the .srt in SubtitleStudio and convert to .ssa (if Time Adjuster can't save as .ssa)
Then follow the route outlined above (frame serving to encoder from VirtualDub).

  5. A. I canīt load the .srt file in Subtitle Studio. A sign comes up and says that the format is not supported.

    B. What do you mean by following route outlined above??

Ok sir I'll help you I'm a self proclaimed expert on subtitles Why you ask well I speak English but my wife is Korean so I have to add Korean subtitles to all my dvd's (over 500) so here I go I have to assume that you are making a dvd out of a avi file right and you want to fit the subtiles to the avi and then to the dvd here is the way to do that You'll need two programs SubtitleWorkshop and srt2sup. Find the subtitle in any format smi srt ssa it doesn't matter but srt is better for what we want to do.

launch SubtitleWorkshop click on file and load subtitle. Then click on Movie and load your avi. If you set things up right the movie will begin playing right away hit the stop button. You need to check the subtitle file for two things 1 overlapping subtitles and some characters that are no good. mostly html commands used in most smi subs. these contain <....>brackets and specify font colors etc... Click tools and then information and errors it will show you whats wrong click on fix to fix most of the errors then click on search and search for < go and delete all the <??????> no the subtitle mind you but just what's in in the bracket and the bracket. Once you have done that double click any subtitle and start the movie check to see that the title matches the audio and if it does you are set to go to the saving part.

Click on file then save as and choose Subrip as the output.

Once you have the srt file you need to make it a sup file inorder to add it to a dvd this is not hard to do and if its your intention to make a dvd just let me know and I'll give you a step by step to making a perfect sup file for your dvd.........
    Hope this helps

    Hi jamesbond1960,

I have to say, the timing of this post is spooky - only in the last hour or two I've done a lot of hunting around as I want to add selectable subtitles to my home shot footage (miniDV cam to PC via firewire -> DV AVI -> edited -> save as DV AVI -> encode to MPEG2 for DVD with TMPGEnc -> author with TMPGEnc DVD Author).

What I've gathered so far is that Subtitle Workshop looks good to create the subs, convert them to *.sup with srt2sup for use with ifoedit.

Then I came across your reply to this thread, and you stopped tantalisingly short of what I'm looking for (well, to be confirmed really) - especially as the detail you've given so far looks excellent!

So, if you could finish off the rest, there's a Vodka-Martini in it for you (shaken, not stirred, of course)! Cheers.

I think I can oblige so here goes

Once you have the srt file you really need to convert it to a sup file in order to use with IfoEdit....

    Here is what I do.....
    launch srt2sup

click SRT File and open as Text
click on ok in the box that open up after the SRT file has been opened...
At this point don't worry if the subtitle doesn't display in the language you wrote it or if the characters appear weird we will correct that soon...

Listen now this program is sometimes flakey but if you do what I do you'll never have a problem saving the sup file....

In the title box type the name of the movie clip etc....
Make sure "Is Text" is checked.....
    Click on "All"
Make sure also that "Use Global" is checked

Go up to the top and click on settings
    Then click settings
1st line colors use like me ok
    Silver Black White Grey
    Under silver click on Trans

    Outline "4"
    Use rll checked
    Use default checked
    auto wrap subs checked
    Verticle align bottom
    Horizontal center
    Justify center
    Markers inverse
Screen format Up to you......Pal for pal tv Ntsc for ntsc
background and default background don't touch
Global font choose whatever you like and the languague you wote the subtitle in

For font size I like to use 22 it really looks great on TV
When you are done click ok and then ok again
You'll now see the language displayed properly under the title bar
    Click on Alter subtitle layout
now click play and after a few seconds click cancel and then close

now you are ready to save the sup
    Click on "Sup File"
    The click save sup

It will start to work and in a matter of minutes depending on how large the subtitle file is it will make an sup file...And you are done but here is an important thing.....

When its done saving the file
At the very bottom of the screen in the white box it will say something about the subtitles colors which are very important for IfoEdit

If you used my color scheme These numbers are the most important ones to write down

    Color 0 (zero) b4 80 80
    Color 1 (one) 10 80 80
    Color 2 (two) eb 80 80
    Color 3 (three) 7d 80 80

Now you are ready to author your DvD

Put all required files into IfoEdit and then let it go when IfoEdit is done authoring your DvD you'll need to match the subtitle colors... This is tricky and need to be done if you whant you subtitles to be displayed....

I can help you with this too Just let me know if you need this part too

    Bye for now

There are some programs that do But I only know of IfoEdit.....

    Archie

Ps if anyone knows of any other authering software that allows you to add subs please let me know

I love using TMPGEnc DvD Author and I wish they'd allow us to add subs then it would truely be a remarkable program......

I think you'll find very few do handle subs. So far, I've only tried IfoEdit and it does'em perfectly nice, but has other shortcomings as authoring soft.
dvdauthor supports subs too, but I don't think the GUI does, so far. I think it can even take text based subs and render+mux in one go.

Thanks - Very much appreciated, and very comprehensive looking. I'll give it a go (in the next few weeks) and report back.

I've never used ifoedit - I found a good looking guide and a couple of forum threads, so I'll try those. But may be back for some clarification on finer points.

Guide & threads for tomping, in case you're after something similar:

    3. How to add selectable subtitles to a DVD

I found this during my initial search:

Also, following the link (that Baldrick provides) to another thread - more useful info in that particular post.

Trying to repay some of my debt...

Thanks again for all the help...

  12. Hi JamesBond1960,

What do you mean by "it's a little bit flakey"?

Actually I wrote Srt2Sup to add subtitles to my own DVD of the kids etc!

ReJig is a possible replacement for IfoEdit and I understand that it works better with NTSC DVDs.

If you want and easy way to edit the colours in an IFO file you can use my SupRemap program!

    Hope this additional information helps?

Please don't get me wrong.. I love using srt2sup. When I 1st got the program I don't know why but if I didn't do a succession of things and tried to save the sup file Srt2sup never saved it correctly so I was forced to always make a S2S file then make a sup file. but with some toying around I found I could skip that step....

    That's what I meant by Flakey.......Sorry if I offended......

    Archie

PS thanks for the info on authoring programs......

It would be a perfect world If I could find an all in one authoring program
menu creation (even a simple one)
    chapters
    mutiple titles
    subtitles support
    and burning

TMPGEnc DvD author comes close but doesn't support subs Darn......

  14. Hi,

    I wasn't offended I should have used a smiley

I was jokeing, I am way beyond taking offence at comments about Srt2Sup!

I know that it is fairly unique in what it does it is a real shame I lost the sources. I would love to recreate it and add all the features that people have been requesting, but I just don't have the time!

I have estimated that Srt2Sup had has about 50,000 downloads and my website gets 500 hits a day!

Not bad for something I knocked up in my spare time!

    Regards

  16. Hi,

Maybe Dvd2svcd will, however we are talking about putting selectable subtitles onto a DVD.

I am not sure that DvD2Svcd will allow you to do that?

I checked the dvd to dvd portion of dvd2svcd with subtitles and it states SVCD Subtitles( True selectable subtitles as specified by Philips) to be turned on/off if your dvd player supports it or permanent subtitles.
