Well, I officially raise the white flag. After days of making VCD's that work fine in my PCs DVD player, I still have no luck playing them in my "VCD Supported" Samsung DVD Player.
I've started this epic battle because I wanted to get a digital camcorder and make VCDs with it, but if I can't get any of my multitude of .AVI, .MOV and .MPG files I currently have to play on my external DVD, is there ANY reason to think that taking the video/audio from a camcorder would be any different?

That was my logic too... I couldn't get it working and felt so frustrated that I spent so much money upgrading my computer to not have anything work. And now, lots of experimenting later, it all finally works.
The method of my madness - basically, VirtualDub to TMPGEnc to Nero. Works for me. And I have a Samsung too... I'd recommend making some VCDs and taking them to Best Buy to see if it's your VCDs or your player that doesn't work, and if it's the player... just buy a new one. Or capture your videos on your computer for now until you can afford a DVD player that works. Just don't be a quitter... no one likes a quitter. -
I'd be interested in the model number for your samsung. I have the 7-11, and have no trouble with VCD's using TMPGEnc and NERO with the guides on this site. I've used all sorts of cheap CDs and they work just fine.
I had trouble with SVCDs and just about gave up. I happened to pick up some Memorex Platinum 16x 700meg CDs and gave it a shot one last time. They play perfectly. I've done DVD to SVCD rips and Divx to SVCD, both using 2 pass variable bitrate in TMPGEnc, and so far I've only done the burn at 1x. It worked, and after all the trouble I've had I'm reluctent to try burning at a higher speed because I'm just tired of failing =) I will get around to trying that eventually.
At last I'm not so upset about buying my crappy Samsung, because at least it does this one thing well.

I agree.
I made tens of coasters, with all manner of "tests", from standard VCD's, letting Nero alter non-standard to standard VCD's, XVCD's, SVCD's and XSVCD's, all without any luck at all.
I tried 4 or 5 different brands of CD, all without any luck, then I noticed one small thing - all the tests were done on 700MB media. I tried 650MB CD's, and guess what - no more coasters...
One of these days I'll try some more 700's now that I have VCD's working OK, and see if it was just my settings, or the media in my player. I also have to spend some time looking at higher resolution XVCD's (480*480), and then maybe SVCD's, but one step at a time is the best way...
One thing I did once I got one that worked, was to then select a good clip, encode it at different data rates, sizes etc, and see any obvious differences to see what was best for MY setup.

Okay, I can console you by saying that your VCDs probably are correctly authored!
However, you should do the following:
1. Get out your stand-alone DVD manual. Does it say explicitly that it can play CD-R or CD-RW media?
2. If it doesn't it means that your DVD player was not designed to read CD-R or CD-RW media and not surprisingly, it doesn't do it well.
3. Luckily, most DVD players WILL still play some CD-R/W media, but you will have to experiment with different brands to find one that works.
4. CD-RW by virtue of their optical properties tend to work better in these cases so you could start by experimenting with different brands of CD-RW.
FYI, "VCD compatibility" does not mean "CD-R or CD-RW" compatibility. If you ever purchace another DVD player, be sure that it is both "VCD compatible" AND "CD-R/W compatible".
Regards.

I did have the 709, and it can play VCD`s, I found that the cdr media is the most important thing, VIVASTAR`s are the only disk that i ever got to work with it.(And it is a cheap disk, double win)
I started with nero and easy cd(4 and 5), but found that WinOnCd 3.8 was the best for creating VCD`s(Less jumping).
But they are not the best player for VCD`s, so i got the Pioneer 343, and that does not care what I throw at it.
