  1. I am basicly a noob on making VCD/SVCD/DVD. I am trying to make some VCD's for my friend(Who is computer challenged). Anyway did some preliminary research and then went to it. I used FFmpegX and made the avi file into a bin/cue using the quickpreset option. It made these files. Pilot-1-1.mpg, Pilot-1-1.mpg.bin, Pilot-1-1.mpg.cue, Pilot-1.m1v,Pilot-1.mp2. I then turned on Toast Titanium 6 and clicked on Other, hit the advanced button, checked bin/cue. I then dropped the cue file in and burned it. After it burned I went and put it in my friends Apex 1110W dvd player and hit play and the file started to play(I was also pleased at the video quality... solid) Buuut their was no sound!! I couldn't get it to work! I tested the dvd player to make sure the sound was on... it was... can anyone help?

Many DVD players are not set up to play MPEG sound, at least without changing some audio settings. Find the audio setup screen with your DVD player and experiment with the settings. If you find one that says something like MPEG -> PCM, that's a good one to change.

  3. That didn't work... I think the VCD just doesn't have the sound... when I tested the bin file with VLC it played the video like the dvd player did, but the sound wasn't played either. Pilot-1.mp2 shows up as a sound file, but it is only 15k!

Why don't you just drag the .avi file into the Toast video window, select VCD and burn the disc that way?

Try extracting the sound file, convert it to a .wav and then try ffmpegX again using the video file and the .wav file. Does anything play the movie with sound? Does QT play the movie?

  7. No... not a single one... mplayer, VLC, Quicktime, Apex DVD player... they all played the video, but no sound.

So nothing will play the original .AVI with sound. What does QT or ffmpegX say about the sound file, especially the format? It's beginning to sound as though there is no sound file in the original .AVI.

if none of those apps play the original .avi with sound one would think there is no sound in that .avi file

where did this .avi come from?

    Downloaded most likely

  10. It took me awile, but I finally found out was wrong. Apparently when I was using FFmpegX I was using the mencoder MPEG1 format(FFmpegX said for VCD it is the preferred method) and for some reason it was not using the audio file, but when I used the ffmpeg MPEG1 format it worked!! The VCD that I made is amazing!! The picture and sound quality are better than VHS and seem to be almost DVD quality!

that must have been one high quality .avi!
typically VCD [mpeg1] is about vhs quality
    SVCD [mpeg2] is dvd quality

but no matter, you figured it out and thats whats important
