  1. Good morning. I have ordered a Phillips DVDR985 DVD Recorder. I have read some reviews on this recorder. Many of the reviews were negative towards this item.

    My question is...

Those that have this product what are your results with it?

  3. I have a 985. Fixed by Philips once, now working fine. (had it since June 2002)

The 985 is an obsolete model. You would be better off buying a current model like the DVDR75 or 80.

  4. That from both replies is what I was sort of expecting to read. Ok thank you. When this recorder arrives I will sell it then.

I wonder why a name brand company like Phillips made such a not so good DVD recorder.

    Thank you for both replies.

I currently own a APEX DVD recorder which works fine. Except it is hard to get out of the menu system.

I had the latest model Philips DVDR75 and it started having issues after just 3 weeks. I wasn't prepared to go through all the hassles that so many others have had with their Philips recorders, so I exchanged it for the Panasonic E50. It's not woth the hassle!

  6. My 985 worked perfectly for about 6 months and now it is useless. I just got it back from repair, they replaced the $600 rw mechanism. It recorded 1 dvd and quit working again. Won't even recognize blank dvds now.

I have an OLD 985....one of the first ones made with ff9(something) firmware that has never broken down. No Kiddin.....NEVER.
Don't get me wrong.....my luck with this unit is somewhat rare....but not all Philips DVD Recorders are junk and troublesome.

The only thing I can think of as to why mine has lasted so long is that I NEVER play commercial DVD's in it....and hardly ever play my +R discs in it.....(the ones IT recorded).....and I only play them to check to make sure my chapter points are OK.

I have a little cheap Grundig DVD player for PLAYING....my Philips is for RECORDING.
