I have what I thought was a VCD with excellent playback. (Audio and Video). It will play on my standalone APEX DVD player. It is not burned as a VCD with all the extra files on the disk. It is just a .m2v file on the disk as a file. (No Authoring)
I thought this sort of file was just a video stream like used in Tmpgenc when multiplexing. Why then does it have audio in the movie.
I used G-Spot and Videotoolbox to try and identify, but no luck. I used the render function on Gspot and said is MPEG2_VIDEO with DOLBY_AC3 audio. Videotoolbox can't even see the file as its not a "supported format".
I ask because this video is great quality and I would like to see how it was encoded and try for myself with back-ups.

m2v is MPEG-2 in elementary video stream state. As far as I know (not much to be honest) it cannot contain audio so there must be an ac3 file lurking around somewhere.
Maybe someone else can clarify your question better. -
Its proly just a mpg with ac3 for sound that got named a m2v.

Thank you. I changed the name to .mpg and was able to analyze with VideoToolbox. It is an mpeg2.
My question now, is how's it possible to get a full lenth 95 minute movie as an mpeg2 at 1300mb with such good quality. I tried to convert the same movie from DVD w/ Tmpgenc to an mpeg2, but the file is 4Gb.
How the Hell is it possible to compress so much and still retain the quality? No program I have seen is capable of doing this.In your ear with a can of beer, Up your nose with a rubber hose.

that doesnt work out
2.69gig @ 235 minutes = ~1390 bit rate
3000 bit rate would work out to a ~5.5 gig file
thats even with 128 audio"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
you must of meant your max bit rate is 3000.... your avg bit rates would work out to what i posted before ...

Thats what i meant, sorry for not stating that, the movie is very slow moving so it doesnt need lots of bitrate for it.

Here is what VideoToolbox reported. (I cant post a screenshot so here are the stats) It is PAL and I tried NTSC.
This is just analysing the second half but you get the point.
File Size is 697Mb and is 45 Minutes long (First half is same)
Video:
Resolution: 720x576
FPS: 25.00
BitRate: 4883 Kbps
Quality Factor: .48 b/px
Codec: MPEG2
Audio:
Number of Channels: 2
Sample Rate: 48000Hz
BitRate: 112 Kbps
Codec: MPEG Audio 1 Layer 2
I set TMPGENC with the same settings with the exception of
Video Resolution is NTSC 720x480 and 29 fps.
Again, this is better than any VCD I have ever seen and is very small considering it is an mpeg2.In your ear with a can of beer, Up your nose with a rubber hose.

Some movies can be made that small to look good but others need much more bits so they are way bigger but hey if they can be made small.

not really sure what this thread is about as every post the resolution , time , bit rate and everything else seems to change ..
is there a question here ?"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Yah. The question is How can you make an Mpeg2 so small with such settings? The final stats I gave are the acurate stats according to Videotoolbox. This is half of the whole movie. And no matter how the math works out I have a video with these numbers.
