  1. I've been trying to cut 2 sequences from a movie using TMPGenc. The original file plays fine, no problems with that. But when I try to cut the first sequence, which is right at the beginning, the resulting file only has sound for about 3 minutes. When I try to cut the second sequence, which is somewhere towards the end, I get only 17M(basically, it's impossible to get the whole sequence). What is wrong with the original file that causes these problems and can it be fixed?

How was it cut? If you used Merge & Cut, try the Source Frame Function, or vide versa.

  3. I used merge&cut. How do I use source frame function?
Is there any way to fix the original file? It probably has some damage.

  4. Use Gspot or AviCodec to get details of your source file and post back.. will help us to help you.

As to source control range, look in your TMPGEnc help file for details/usage.
    Always check helpfiles/instructions before leaping...

  5. It's a .mpg file, so neither Gspot nor AviCodec could give any info on it.

I looked over some guides and I still don't see how to split with anything other than merge&cut. Could you give some details on this source control range?

the source control range thing is a re-encode. If you are willing to
do that , any editor will work. Try MPEG2VCR. It works
unless the movie is soft telecined or mixed.

  7. So you're saying a re-encode would fix the problems in the original file

Not necessarily, there may be something wrong with it.
Decoding the video will alow you to edit easily. Then you have to re-encode
If you must do that, see if it plays OK with VdubMod. If it does ,
you can edit and frameserve it to TMPGenc to encode it.
You lose quality , and it takes lots of time that way.

Another way is get VideoStudio 7 demo. If you are careful , it will
    edit without re-encoding.
