  1. My father is looking at geting a dvd burner and is asking me about it. Is there a decent selection of freeware for the mac that is very easy to use? I am not looking for particular recomendations or how to use it, as I can search all that out myself. I just want to know if it is avalable. If it is not easy to use (like clone dvd and any dvd together, where you dont have to set anything), he will probably be calling every night for help. I don't mind helping but it would be beter if he can do it himself (particularlly as I am not that farmiliar with macs). I have searched through the forums a bit but I am unfarmiliar with some of the programs like toast (which I think he already has) but I can search this forum and through the tools if I know there is something out there. He will primarily be doing dvd-9 to dvd-5 backup. Thanks for any help!!

if he has toast already just get him to download the 0sex ripper (free and easy to use with a couple of sentences of instruction) and buy DVD2OneX (50 euros and very simple to use). In my opinion by far the easiest solution for DVD9 to DVD5. (He could replace 0sex with MacTheRipper if the new version 2(?) is out).

  3. Thanks for the info. I'll recomend those programs and keep searching through the tools list to see what other programs like dvd2one x there are. I personally like having more than one program avalable incase one has a problem with a particular dvd. The programs you listed will certainlly get him started though. Thanks for the help.

dvd2one is the premier app for OSX. It has never had a problem with any thing you toss at it. The problems lie in the ripping methods

personally YadeX and the new mac the ripper are now the premier rippers for OSX. i have yet to have any disk not rip with one or the other.

freeware apps are easy to find for ripping
    compression apps are purshase
burning apps are purchase for the premier app (toast) but you can use the finder burn [has limitations though] that is built into the OS of the mac

If dvd2one works that well with macs I'll just recomend that. It's not that expensive if it really does work all the time. Do I understand right that mac the ripper is new and still has some bugs or is there a stable version? The only link I could find to it is this one.

  7. Thanks again for the info. He can always update to newer versions of mac the ripper as they become avalable if the current version is beta. Beta or not, it sounds like it works pretty well.
