How does a dual layer burner burn? Does it modulate the beam depending on which layer it's writing? If so, would this be how a single layer drive could be upgraded to a dual layer by updating the firmware?
Or is there really no way a drive can be upgraded to dual layer?

Hard to say when theres none around,it would seem they would need to switch burn depth by beam strength for the next layer, maybe some dvd`s can be upgraded hopefully.

by adjusting the focal point of the lasers, there is roughly a 50% intnesity loss in the beam, though enough to divet the media.

AH yes, it is important to divet the media. Fully diveted media is an absolute necessity in this day and age. 8)
