  1. I haven't seen this subject addressed before. I have a sony trv38 with firewire and haven't been able to use the passthrough feature on this with a vcr attached because the program always looks for a tape in the cam and then only plays that. I have the software that came with the camera (pixela image mixer) and windows movie maker 2 but they will only recognize the tape from the camera. Have tried a few others with no success. Can anyone recommend freeware/trialware I can try to see if I can capture analog using my passthrough feature? I have no problem paying but want to make sure first as nothing has worked yet. Thanks

WinDV works great. It will transfer in type1 or type2. Free!

  3. I have a trv33 and i'll bet its the same for pass-through. in the camera's on-screen menu, is the "AV/DV out" switched to "on"? and take out the tape also.

  4. Tried Windv and it works but I can't find the file I put on the computer. Where does it go? And yes I have tried no tape (then it says tape not found) and I have it set to dv out etc. The preview window shows what I want but when you press capture it goes to the tape. This reply is to two posts; sorry I don't know another way.

  5. Not sure then. When I have my unit set to VCR setting, it doesn't tell me anything about having no tape. and to work, i have to have the tape out. when you say it shows in the preview window, do you mean on the computer, or on the unit? regarding where it stores the file, i'm sure in the settings that it has a default location where it stored it. I haven't used the program so I don't know.

  6. The lcd on the cam shows the vcr and so does the computer but when you start recording it goes to the tape if there is one or says no tape available or something like that. You simply can't get what's being played on the vcr. But now windv is working, I just need to find the files I have recorded, or any other program sugestions?

In WinDV just set where the file will be transfered to in the "Capt. file:" window.

  8. Sony DV camcorder has an item in the menu called "AV/DV out", and you must enable it first.
Next, some capture software sends command to the DV camcorder tell it to PLAY the tape inside so that it can capture !!! I have one that does it (neoDVD), there is no way to disable this stupid feature. If I don't put in a tape, the software complaints "no tape to capture!!!".
Pinnacle Studio 8 on the other hand has an option to turn OFF this feature and that's how I got my DV camcorder to act as pass-thru.

Capture using Windows Movie Maker, have your source device playing and simply record. Be sure to choose the 'setting' and destination folder.

This sounds exactly like the problem. I use scenalyzerlive and haven't had this problem at all. not freeware, but not expensive.

  11. Thanks everyone for the kind help. I downloaded winDV and it works now. I will look into buying a more expensive program eventually but just want to get started for now. Almost human, do you know where I can get more info on winDV? I'm wondering what the check box is next to the capture button and why there are two file options for capture. At first it would only capture for 12min30secs but I figured out to set the frame limits higher. Now I'm good to go but which is more favorable of the two formats? Thanks again

The checkbox next to the Capture button enables the program to control your camcorder/vcr automatically. If you right click on the "WinDV" title in the upper left hand corner and select "About WinDV" you will get the authors e-mail address and the web site with instructions.

A lot of programs, including Studio 7, will only work with type-1 DV-AVI. VirtualDub only works with type-2 DV-AVI. Ulead VideoStudio and TMPGEnc work with both.
