  1. Hi all,

In a PAL-B country. I got a few mates with NTSC tapes. We all have NTSV playback VCR's. They can all play NTSC tapes fine on their VCR > TV setup.

Mine has NTSC playback as well. and i recall it playing fine when it was the families main VCR.
Playing it through my VCR to my PC it flickers like crazy although the VCR says NTSC on the LCD display so appears to be recognised and playing fine. So i grabbed a small 34cm TV from another room brought it into mine and layed it on there, same thing.

So borrowed a mates VCR that has played this very tape fine and guess what ...... exact same results!!
    1) it flickers on mt PC
    2) it flickers on the small 34cm TV

    1) does a TV etc have a bearing onto how a tape is played back and therefore thats where the problem lies.
    2) do i need an NTSC TV/capture card

PS i changed the jumpers on the capture card to NTSC but no difference.
PSS my VCR can play EP (Extra Long play) but the same thing results on the TV and PC, it flickers like crazy, unwatchable.

Thanx for any insight on this.

I am also very interested to know the solution to this problem, because I have a NTSC VHS tape that I imported from the USA and I wish to capture and burn it to DVD. The VHS plays fine in my VHS recorder through the TV but not when I try to capture it via my PC. I am a very experienced video capturer and have solved all my problems apart from this particular one!

Dunno, maybe it has? Is there any software that can block the Macrovision from getting through and ruining my video capture?

  6. I ended up getting a semi-decent copy done using half res (352x240 or so)
it was watchable, but black and white

it was only film for scouting purposes (Football)

definately wasn't DVD like quality !

You are probably trying to capture a PAL60 video signal.
Unfortunately not much devices accept that format for digitizing.

If you have a 878 or higher based capture card, you can try to use the
    BTWINCAP driver at http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/

    It supports PAL60.
I sucessfully grabbed a PAL60 signal with it...

Thanks for the suggestion and I have downloaded those BTWINCAP drivers a few times over the last couple of years but never had the opportunity to use them, i.e. I was worried they would screw up my existing vfw drivers and maybe need a full reinstall of Windows etc.

Apparently the BT878 chipset doesn't support Macrovision, so maybe it is just a case of my VHS using PAL60 like you suggested.

No need to look for that NTSC playback stuff for VCR's. With a right hand drive car, the steering wheel does not autmatically change side depending on what country you are in, dont expect more from a VCR. NTSC tape = NTSC signal output.
