Windows Media Player wont play mpg1

All of sudden..my media player will not play mpg1. It will play avi, wmv and mpg2.
I have various codecs for my player and it will play all except standard mpgs, mpgs that I've d/l or ones that I have created. Just plain old simple mpgs. I've tried other players and they wont work either. I can load the mpg in TMPGenc and go to the settings and take a look at the source. I can even load the mpg into VirtualDub create an AVI and play it using the media player....I've ugraded, patched my Win 2000...and it still wont work.
I hope someone might know why..cause I surely don' t know
