I want to use whatever kind of software is needed and make system restore/recovery discs from my current setup, just like the ones Compaq made for my system.

But it must be for DVD media, not CD media. Nero 5.5 has a "Backup HD" function, but requires CDs. It's either 15-20 DVDs or 125-150 CDs (yuck!) to do the job. I'd rather do the DVD method.

Something surely exists... any ideas? Help! Thanks.

One system is a Windows ME system. The other runs Windows XP Pro.
The ME system is most imporant. I can redo the XP one if needed.

  2. Image software
    ghost burns straight to DVDs

    Backup software
    Veritas
    NovaBackup

    What I do,
I create a ghost image of my primary HDD once a month on DVD-RWs
I keep them for 6 months and then write over
I do backups to tape once a week of my data storage area, as I store all data to a specific partition

    Veritas NovaBackup ?

If my HD dies one day, can the restore discs do like the Compaq ones, and reformat, repartition and fully restore the hard drive contents?

If you want a simple restore disk like an OEM, I would suggest using

  5. I use DriveImage. It's by the same guys that make Partition Magic (PowerQuest). It will make images on dvd and has a "boot restore" feature - but to be honest, I've never actually done the boot thing.

oops, stiltman beat me to it!

I'm looking at both things right now, Norton Ghost and then DriveImage. Norton has tutorials online that show exactly what I want, so I'm leaning that direction right now. No decisions yet.

  9. Use Ghost. Its so simple and gets the job done right. Its always worth doing a Ghost image before installing any new software, as its easier to re-ghost a hard drive than completely remove some fucked-up code!
