    Hi all

Relative newbee so all help much appreciated.

I’ve been ripping backup movies for a few months now using a Pioneer 105 and Nero…………..it really could not be simpler.

I realises that there can be stand alone player compatibilities issues but I am having loads of problems with discs that will play perfectly well for about three quarters of the movie and then freeze on one DVD player and yet will play all the way though on another.

If it’s a compatibility problem why does it play (and crystal clear btw) for a while and then stop.

    Cheers

Different media will play well on one machine and not another, so that could be the problem. Or it could be Nero, I use RecordNow Max and my backups play perfectly on my 2 players (both Pioneers).

    Hi Steveryan

I do understand what you say about different media but it baffles me why the disc will play absolutely perfectly for a hole hour or so and then stop.

If it didn’t play at all I could understand this but if it’s an incompatibility problem media or player type, then why play at all.

I know the burn is ok as the disc will play all the way through on another player.

I'm not sure myself tbh but problems with media usually occur at the end of the disc, some players will have problems with that. When I first got my 105 I did a couple of backups using ICE branded media, they played fine in my 105 and Toshiba DVD rom but when I tried them in my dvd players they stuttered and froze towards the end. Since I started using Riteks i've had no problems at all. I see you're from the UK, have you tried www.svp.co.uk for cheap Riteks?

    Yep steveryan

SVP is where I get all my stuff from…..105 drive ….Ritek discs…..cases……..they are very good to deal with. Even swapped by first 105 with a fault which developed after a couple of weeks.

If I was using cheap discs I could understand as well, but with using Riteks I really am baffled.

    Thanks for your help.

  6. Does it always fail in the same point on each film ?

If so, it could be your VTS Sector mapping is wrong, and it's confusing the player where the layer break would have been on the original or some other such problem associated with your authoring procedure.

I noticed yet another "blame Nero" post in the mix, I have to say that I have used Nero exclusively for absolutely ages without problems, as have a great many other people, and don't think that is your issue here.

  7. FWIW, I am having the same problem. My Star Wars (self authored backup) DVD locks at almost the end of the movie. Also, my Disney's Tarzan DVD backup (movie only) locks up right at the end when Jane kisses Tarzan. It's kind of a funny place to lock, but it still sucks. On my Pioneer, it loks at the beginning of that chapter. Doesn't even make it to the kiss.

I have tried both TDK +R media and Memorex. I am going to try -R when I get a good moment. I was sort of hoping it was not a laser alignment issue (for the writer).

Another thought I had was that maybe it was just burning too fast (oblong shaped pits). But changing the write speed in DVD Decrypter didn't matter. It still burned at max speed.

BTW, I have been burning with DVD Decrypter. I make the image file using IFOedit.

I hope we find a solution soon.

No it can fails in different places.

One thing I have noticed is that once a film fails on one player, it will either play on my player or fail in a different place.

Sorry but can you tell me where to look for “VTS Sector mapping” and how to correct it.

I have an Apex and an Opterite. The Apex plays anything. The Opterite doesn't like TDK -r 2X's after the 3 GB mark. The TDK disks test 100% in DVDInfo Pro.

So basically you have to match your media to your player. This is somewhat common. It's also the reason why super cheap disks work great for some people and not others.
