  1. Actually, I've just had a thought. If the RAM is unstable at these speeds, could raising VDimm do for the RAM what VCore does for the CPU?

Perhaps I could raise the FSB to a speed it wouldn't boot at and raise VDimm to try to persuade it to go.

    What do you guys think?

  2. Right now is your memory set to be 100%? 100% of the FSB speed.
That could be why you are hitting a wall.
If you increase the voltage for the dimm then yes you could possibly go farther.

You could also try setting the memory so it is running at 166 just for testing. Then try to increase the FSB and see if the memory was the limiting factor.

It probably is the ram holding you up... Corsair is the overclockers champion...
If you are hovering over 45C idle and over 50C under what you consider load, you might want to consider liquid cooling... my system was hanging out around 50C load with my fans drowning out all other noise... then I built my own water cooling system and hear my hard drive spin up..... it's that quiet and temps are under 40C load now..
How did you build your own??? Is it hard to do?

  4. Piccoro,

Does RAM work in this way? I would have thought that it's the same as CPUs - at certain speeds, the processor does not make many mistakes but at higher speeds it does and becomes instable. Why is is that RAM is different, and setting it to 166 (therefore DDR333) will allow me to test its ability?

Maybe I'm missing something, just seems weird to me.

    Thanks,

    Cobra

EDIT: My memory is set to 100% (AUTO on Asus motherboards)

  5. OK, I've decided to change the RAM over to something else. What brand do you guys suggest? I don't have much to spend - up to £65 for a 512MB module. I only need it to run stable at DDR400.

Does anyone know a certain brand to be trustworthy?

    Thanks!

  6. Corsair, OCZ, Kingston...

  7. I found a Kingston kit. If I run these dual channel, would I later be able to drop in another 512MB module into my third memory slot and maintain this pair in dual channel, whilst the other works single-channel mode?

Just worrying about future upgrade potential...

    Here's what I'm looking at: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3...duct_uid=52643

    Thanks for the quick reply!

  8. Here's a good thread: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=209781

From what i gather, depends on mobo.

  9. Thanks, that helped a lot. I've ordered that RAM and it should be with me in a week or so. Here's hoping!

    Thanks again!

Nope.. pretty easy actually. The only thing I actually bought that was designed for water cooling was the water blocks for the CPU, GPU and Northbridge. A really great site for information on overclocking/cooling is www.overclockers.com they have a great forum there with some people who are doing some extreme cooling... like phase change at -40C CPU temp!!

Wow! i know tomshardware did a P4 ~5GHz OC with liquid nitrogen cooling!!

Yeah, that was a pretty cool video and a "cool" project....
Most of the extreme coolers on overclockers site are running over 4 gig CPU's right now, the water cooled guys go from 800 mhz to over 3 ghz.. great site to hit up for research. Building my water system was fun, needed a project and benefited by reducing my computer noise.
