I suspect you're looking at the CDR write speed. My NEC ND1300a writes at 16X CDR but max 4x DVD-/+R.

  6. Done a quick Google search on this unit. Especially in the forums and such. This drive is 8x max with dvd+r. And you are not the only one who has seen this "oddity" with this drive. Among other "oddities" I won't list here. Might I suggest you do your own Google search, it might be helpful to you down the road with this drive.

  7. does it actually burn at that speed ?, 14x should be around 5 mins, give it a go.
    If it's wet, drink it

It may read a CD at 40x but it will not burn it at 40x

your burning application probably doenst know how fast the burner is. so it just assumes it can go up to 14x. i bet if you selected that, it would drop down to 8x in the burning process

  10. Either that or make a coaster!

I have an 8 x DVD burner but was told that there are no 8x DVDR's made yet (and I havn't seen any). So am I right in assuming that it's only burning at 4x with a 4x DVDr ?

  13. My Plextor 8x external (708UF) will burn at up to 8x on 4x rated media. Make sure you have the latest firmware for your drive and it will prob burn 8x on 4x quality media. Nero and other programs will tell you how fast they are running. Do note that they all usually start at a slower speed and pickup near the middle of the disc, then perhaps slow down again.

  15. with my Memorex 4x burner I can get it to burn at 16x by quickly throwing in a disk and hit burn, but coasters out every time. I think what your referring to is when you first throw in a disk the drive assumes it's a cdr or cdrw, if you wait a few seconds your drive should recognize the disk as 4x and burn a quality disk

no im just talkin about under properties where it says select write speed. i noticed today when i did a cdr in nero it gave the option for 60x, but i only have 48x discs so it dropped it down to 40x..i dont know whats up with this drive...

like i said, your burning app is just assuming that your burner can burn that fast and/or the media will go that fast. i have a 6x cd burner in my older computer and everytime i burn a cd with nero, it lets me choose up to 16x burn speed, but it will only burn at 6x.

  18. This is interesting, because there has been serious debate as to whether or not 12X recorders may be the physical limit for the format.

I think the software is retarded and not the user.

Actually, retarded means to slow down or hinder. If this were the case it would be the opposite of writing that fast(which it does not), but it still will(should) write at the rated speed of 8x.

Ok kids, I want you all to take out your crayons and Johnny, no wise cracks or perverted pictures today.

B's Recorder does the same thing with CD-RWs on my system. You throw one in the drive and it gives you the option of recording at 40X. But then it starts the process and let's you know, "Hey *******! You're drive is only rated at 24X and the media is rated at 10X. What the hell is wrong with you, are you retarded? We're slowing this train down!"

    Maybe it's an ATIP issue.

actually smartass "retard" would mean to slow down or hinder. "retarded" would be in the process of slowing down or being delayed. and in the form i used it in refering to myself would be: adj : relatively slow in mental or emotional or physical development; "providing a secure and sometimes happy life for the retarded"

  22. 14x should be the read speed of the dvd
