  1. Howdy,

Okay, yes, I've read all the past forums on this. And yes, I've tried what I can that was suggested.

I'm running 10.2.8 on a G3 350 with 500+mb RAM. I have had previous success running DVD Backup. I was able to make region 0 version of region 3 films in my collection, and just recently was able to burn Criterion's Solaris and Kino's Dead or Alive.

Then one day DVD Backup just stopped working. I tried to rip Ringu (Dreamworks), Castle Laputa, and the most recent Criterion version of 400 Blows. No good--it just stops and gives me the file error message (if at all) that many of you have posted. It can't get past the first main VOB file.

Yes, I've run DVD Player first, and have also gone through each chapter. I've tried OSEX (crash), Hades (won't even open the app), and Mac the Ripper (crash).

I've reinstalled DVD Backup and unStuffed the file with an older version of Stuffit, like somebody suggested. I defragmented by destination external drive (128Gb La Cie). On and on.

I *was* able to get DVDExtractor to make a full image (of 400 blows) in 9.2.2, but nothing in OSX will mount it. Disk Copy gives an error message of -95 and Toast (5.2) just does nothing.

So, from my tale of woe, can anyone suggest anything? I'm going nuts with this...

As a part of the MacTheRipper (MTR) project, I'm curious as to why it's crashing. Are you running the MacOS X 10.2.x version of MTR? If so, I'd like to get a copy of your MTR crash log. To get that, launch the "Console" application located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Then, choose 'Open' in the 'File' menu, go to the crash logs folder in the open dialog window, and locate the MacTheRipper.crash.log file, and double-click on it. Then, copy everything, and paste it into a private message or email to me. We can try to see what's causing the problem. As for the disc image that DVDExtractor made, try renaming it from *image to .toast, put Toast in Copy mode and choose 'image file' from the left side column, and drag the image over Toast's window and drop it there. It should then let you burn it to DVD.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  3. I will try what you say Wise Weasel. In the meantime, the solution for the *image problem is a bit more complicated, as the original is 7.8Gb and needs to go through DVD2OneX first. I was hoping to mount the disc and have DVD2One deal with it.

I had the same trouble with a DVDExtractor image in OSX, nothing would mount it. You might want to boot back to 9, mount the image, and copy it to the HD. Probably the easiest thing to do.

  5. Wise Weasel: Not only is there no crashlog for Mac the Ripper, but there isn't even one for DVD Backup. Huh?

Renaming *image to .toast. No dice. I'm using Toast 5.2, and it doesn't want to have anything to do with it.

Tugboat: I will attempt your advice next.

Thanks for your help so far.

    Don't have/haven't tried YadeX.
OSeX does the same thing as DVD Backup. Freezes on the first big VOB file. I can watch the light on the DVD drive as it's reading. Solid green...and then it goes off. Then I know it's frozen.

    Wise Weasel:
Watched Console as I attempted to rip. The last thing it said was "looking for image 'bang'" or "couldn't find image 'bang'". I would have cut and pasted this, but the Finder froze too. I guess it's not my day.

However, Tugboat's idea of mounting •image in 9.2.2 and then copying it to my external...seems to be working!

  8. Something seems to be corrupted. Have you tried creating a new user in OSX and then installing the software. If this doesn't work...maybe try reinstalling OSX?

I agree, I think an OS reinstall is in order for some reason. That'll fix 'er right up...

  10. Okay,

I did a partial reinstall of OSX (replaced system, but did not erase the whole disc). Still the same problem. DVDBackup gave me file errors and hung. YadeX froze. And although I was able to rip in 9.2.2 and then mount and copy the disc to my external, DVD2OneX froze trying to encode it (8 minutes into it, I had such hopes).

The next step is to do a complete reinstall--erase the entire disc. When I have the time to do that, I will.

    Thanks
