I have been using TMPGEnc to encode AVI files into DVD comliant elementary audio and video streams.

This normally takes around 6- 8 hours

This i can live with, leave it running overnight.

However the most recent file i have TMPGEnc says that it is going to take over 14 hors !!! to encode.

Does this sound normal??? The file isnt any bigger than normal, and the quality is much the same!!
Is there a faster and FREE encoder that i can use?

    thanks in advance

  2. you might want to re-check your tmpgenc settings (filters, motion estimate, etc) for new/changed...

or using Gspot or AviCodec, see if your avi file is something different from those with the "normal" processing time
    Always check helpfiles/instructions before leaping...

  3. The only FREE mpeg encoder that I am aware of is BBMpeg. And it makes TmpGenc look like a speed demon!

  4. 14hrs looks about right with your specs.
    If it's wet, drink it

  5. If you change from CQ65 to 2-pass VBR, maybe add a filter or two, then TMPGEnc can be damn near as slow as bbMPEG. Funny, in my experience settings don't much affect encoding speed in bbMPEG (dead slow). Quality ain't bad though.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

so is there a non-free encoder that is easy to use for newbie that is likely to process significantly faster (therefore worht investment) than TMPGEnc

mostof the guides use TMPGEnc or CCE (which i cant seemto get on with)

    thanks in advacne

Canopus Procoder and Mainconcept MPEG Encoder are both very good encoders. Canopus is probably easier to use between the two but Mainconcept is faster.

Are you are using the 2-pass encoding (VBR)? I was doing that as well, then I read this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php

It's amazing. I use the bitrate calculator and then use CBR encoding with the corresponding bitrate from the calculator, and the results are superb!! My TMPGEnc times are also down to between 3-4 hours

I've also started to frameserve the movie I'm converting from Virtualdub, even if TMPGEnc doesn't need it. For some reason, the movies seem to encode faster when they are frameserved from Virtualdub for me. Maybe it's just an illusion though!

Yep i using a bitrate calc, using a value lower than it suggests

Weird, but as above i think i gonna try mainconcept, the trial version is quoting a 2-3 hour encoding for same file!

I dont fully understand frameserving yet so i dont do it.....maybe next thing for me to look into and learn about.

    thank you
