I'm not sure this is the right forum, but I couldn't find one for simple conversion (I might have just glossed over it).

For work, I took a DVD that I had already made and tried converting the MPEG2 to an AVI file. I wanted the file to fit on a CD, so I used the Indeo codec for compression; the purpose was to get a file that was easily playable by Windows Media Player.

Everything worked fine and the finished product looked great...however, when I brought it to work, I discovered that Indeo is proprietary and it costs $14.95 to install the codec. My computer had already come with it installed.

Unforunately, my client does not have that codec and it would be pretty bad taste to ask them to spend money when they would not have to.

Is there another, decent, non-proprietary compression algorithm that I can use? Help!! Help!!

  2. You could try the MS wmv codec. The encoder can be downloaded free from MS and the codec is installed on every recent PC or is downloaded by WMP when you play the video.

Would this be the same as the following:

    MS-MPEG4V2 (for video)
    Microsoft ADPCM (for audio)?

    Thanks again!!
