  1. Total novice at this...technology on this subject has passed me by. Help me with some info.

I am having some old 35mm film put on a dvd by a professional studio. Once this is done, I want to burn several copies for members of my family.

So the first requirement in software I am hoping to find is being able to make copies of dvd's.

The second feature I am looking for is a software that will allow me to put VHS home movies and burn them onto dvd.

The third feature I am looking for is the ability to put .avi's and .mpegs onto a dvd.

The link describing the DVD X Maker from 321 Studios is:

Can this software do what I need? And, other than this software, what other hardware will I need? A DVD Burner? Capture Card?

  2. hold up on the dvd x maker s/w for now and concentrate on your first interest of copies of your dvd with the 335mm footage:

given what you already have, suggest you download DVDShrink (freeware) which will be the copying software. Try this guide; https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=497&howtoselect=6;30#497

You'll need a dvd burner and blank media disks. Suggest you get a dual burner that can write either plus or minus type media. As to burner models/brands, look over in the l/h column this page for the DVD writers section. Do the same for media choice... and make sure that you buy a cuppla rewitable disks for use while learning/experimenting.

    good luck.

  3. Thanks for the help.

After reading the reviews here, I have ordered the NEC ND-2500A. Once I get this, and install the hardware, I'll install the freeware you suggested.

I'll repost at that time seeking advise on the items I need to burn .avi's, mpeg's and what to get in order to transfer my analog home videos from vhs.

  5. Yea!

Just got my DVD Burner Installed!!!

OK, my first ambition is to burn my .mpeg & .avi music video files from my hard drive to a DVD so that I can watch these videos on a TV using a standard DVD player. What will this entail and what do I do to accomplish this?

    Thanks!

  6. Whoa, Nellie !

    What's all them avi's and mpg's you're talking about ? If you have a number of them, what's their structure/detail ?

The extension names "avi" and "Mpg" are like "car" and "truck"... very generic descriptions that can mean a whole lot of makes/models.

If you're not sure, start with two freeware utilities - Gspot and AviCodec.

If they have been downloaded from the internet, watch out - many of those files arre either very poorly made or corrupt.

M/W, put the r disks away and break out the rw's to learn with. If you were successful with backing up dvd's , then time to look at capturing.

Several ways to go about it, both in terms of hardware and software.

    Hardware:
Many users here use pci cards, such as the ATI sereis. Costs are reasonable, results are very good - given that you have the savvy and grit to work thru the tweaking sometimes needed.
Others prever to use digital converter devices, such as the canopus advc-100 . Costs are higher and hard drive sizes need to be larger, but easier to use along with very good video quality, locked audio and no frames dropped.
    Software:
Again, many choices... but could be broken into two categories; All-in-ones like Nero Pinnacle, Ulead or a collection of separate apps each doing a portion of the dvd burning process.
The first group offers convenience, but more costly. The other takes more time to put together (much like a toolbox) but provides greater flexiblity.

Anyhow, take time to go thru the relevant articles over in the l/h column under the "how to" section. Follow that up by doing same with the "other" section.

Then it's time to get your capture device and software to process same.

    Good luck.

  7. Arghhh! Frustration.

I've taken everything into account that I have learned so far. Went out and got a few DVD-RW's to practice with. I've downloaded AVIcodec and have learned to identify files. I've downloaded TMPGEnc-2.5... and have even converted a .mpeg1 file to a mpeg2 file (ABBA's I Do video). QUIT Laughing!

I tried using HT Burn DVD 3.1 Shareware but when it came to burning the video, all I got was a "burn failed" error...no other explanation.

I tried downloading the trial versions of Neros software from download.com and of all the BS, it wouldn't let me use the software without entering the serial code that came "with the disc". There is no serial code. Very frustrating since I cannot evaluate the darn software for purchase without trying it at first. Is there any other burning software that I can try?

  8. Think of it as sore kister while learning ice skating.

OK, you now have an MPEG-2 of ABBA vis TMPGEnc Plus.. progress.

Make sure the Audio is either MPeg-1 layer 2 (preferred for this excersize) or PCM.... 48 khz frequency
Make sure the MPEG file size is >4.1 gig
Play the file in media player classic to verify video/audio integrity.

Downlaod trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) & install.
READ IT"S HELPFILE and usimng same, load your ABBA file.
Author and burn with TDA's built-in burning engine to a rw disk.

If TDA cannot recognize yout burner, then time to go back and re-check/redo burner installation/setup.

    keep us posted...

  9. OK,

I've got a DVD that I need to make numerous copies of. When I run AVICODEC, it shows two files:

    1) VIDEO_TS.VOB

    and

    2) VTS_01_1.VOB

I tried using Super DVD Copy, followed the directions to a tee and made a coaster. It wouldn't play in my DVD player. The DVD I am trying to make numerous copies of is a commercial that is 90 seconds long.

Can someone help me figure out a way to make copies?

    Thanks
