  1. I used TMPGENC to convert a 700mb AVI file to 3.9GB DVD compliant MPEG. This worked very well but when I then used Nero Vision Express 2, it eventually tells me there is not enough space on the disc and to please insert another. How is this possible???

I have tried on many occasions to burn DVD's and have not been able to burn any!!!!!!

I would welcome any advice. Any!

    Am I doing anything wrong?

    PLEASE HELP

Using Nero Vision Expreess, maybe? If the TMPGEnc metod worked, why did you switch to Nero?

  3. I switched to Nero to burn the DVD. Any suggestions to just simply burn MPEG compatible straight to disc.

I have NeroVisionExpress and Roxio DVD creator and both don't have the option to simply burn the MPEG file straight to DVD.

I'm sure they both can, but then you'd create a data DVD, and I suspect that's not what we want, is it?
The step between "I have an mpg" and "I'm ready to burn a video DVD" is called authoring, and there are lots of applications for that step. DVD-Lab and TMPGEnc DVD Author seems to be the most popular. Take a look at the Tools section under authoring for more alternatives.
Using the authoring application, you'll end up with an empty AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder full of .IFO's, .BUP's and .VOB's. These two folders (and their content) should be burned to the DVD. safest method is to create an image of these using imgtools classic, then burn the image with DVDDecrypter. Some authoring applications can even create the image for you.

If you tried burning a 4 gb mpeg file with nero in data mode then you will get that message, nothing over 2 gigs can be burned unless you choose udf.Its best to make the mpeg into dvd compatible files with a program such as tmpgenc dvd author and then burn with dvd video option in nero.

  6. Hey guys he's using Nero Vision Express which IS an authoring tool.

    Prest,
If the program is telling you it is too big it is probably because it is too big. Don't forget that in addition to your video you are creating menus. If the menus happen to be motion menus they can take up a fair amount of room.

To test this theory, make your source video smaller or change your menus until you don't get that "too big" message.

Another idea is just to tel Nero Vision Express to make the files for you but not burn them. then run them through DVD shrink and then burn,

    Presto (no relation)

OK, Nero Vision, right. Well, Vision might not accept the audio format used in the DVD mpeg, and is decompressing it to LPCM (don't know what audio format it supports) which would add around 1 GB extra for a standard movie.

I admit Nero applications have some advantages, but they all have a tendency to do stuff (like reencoding) without telling you what it's doing...

I stay away from nero`s all in one authoring encoding packages, what next will they include in there next version?I still think its better to use a standalone program like tmpgenc dvd author or dvd-lab for authoring.

  9. Just burn the DVD files onto hard disk instead of to the disc. All the authoring packages, including NVE, give you this option. Then open Nero Burning ROM (if you have Vision Express, you have NBR) and try to burn it. It'll give the size of the burn in the upper right corner. If it's larger than 4.38GB (4.7 billion bytes) it'll let you know. After burning the files onto HD, you can get to NBR by going back to Smart Start (in expert mode), select the "DVD" tab in the upper right, select the "Data" right under the "Nero" logo, and select "Make UDF/ISO Disc". That starts NBR. Once in the app, click the farthest left icon on the toolbar. This creates a new compilation. Make sure you are showing DVD options. Select "Make DVD-Video", and turn off "simulation" in the burn options. Then drag files over and click the burn icon.

    Just burn the DVD files...
    ...
    ...
    click the burn icon.
Jesus! So much for AllInOne packages!
Author with TMPGEnc DVD Author, and make ISO image.
    Burn with DVDDecrypter.
    Done.
What's so terrible about using different (and specialized) applications for different tasks?
