Why is it that most of the files I try to DL on edonkey are queued with every user when there are 30-50 users with the same file?

Because there's about 5000 people trying to DL the same file. Just let it go for a while, maybe overnight, and you'll get it.

Try a Bit torent program instead like Torrent Storm www.suprnova.org

...so, is edonkey regarded as one of the better P2P's, or are there better ones out there?

  4. edonkey is one of the better ones mainly because it doesn't have a bunch of spyware in it, unless you install it on purpose when you install the program. It does have a few issues but its pretty solid. I've been using it for about a month now and have downloaded a good 10GB of data with very few problems. It sucks up system resources though. don't plan on doing too much surfing in the background. It'll feel more like dial-up while edonkey is running. you have to be careful on your firewall setup as well if you use one. Zone Alarm has some known issues with it, a memory leak occurs that will cause the whole deal to freeze up pretty badly. Also just in case you are planning to try it you may need to set it as an exception in Norton Anti Virus to get it to install. set the exception to C:\program files\edonkey2000\edonkey2000.exe I believe is correct. NAV detects a virus script in the program, but its a false positive. NAV is the only one that has a problem with it. Norton and Edonkey have both tried to fix it but I still have the same problems and have to set it as an exception to even get it to install.

I have no complaints about eMule.

In the last 78 days since I reset my stats, I've downloaded over 300 GB of data. The best thing about it is having files that aren't corrupted like almost everything I got off KaZaA. I recommend eMule and eMule Plus highly, as long as you set it up properly you won't have any problems.

  9. Shareaza looks pretty sweat, but I cant seem to connect to any of the networks. I am firewalled...dont know how to change that. BUT, when I use edonkey, it still lets me connect to their networks and I can download...

  12. not too happy with edonkey here anymore. its seems to have issues with a memory leak. all of a sudden out of nowhere it sucks up a bunch of memory and starts freezing things up. then I have to hard reset to computer to get out of it, loosing half my downloads with no way to recover them.

    Poppa_Meth,

eMule/edonkey/Overnet/Shareaza will use a lot of resources during file completion, especially if the file is a 700MB ISO, etc. During this time, eMule moves the file chunk by chunk to your incoming folder, which takes a while. I've noticed that the processor usage goes down considerably, while the RAM usage and HDD activity goes up dramatically. Once the file has completed (usually around 5 min for a 700 MB file) the PC returns to normal. I just do something else while this is going on. If the file is smaller, it takes much less time, and if it's only a few MB, I usually don't even notice it when it completes.

From a web page about general P2P I took the following:

Computer slows down or freezes up?
The most common complaint regarding file sharing is that all computer functions slow to a crawl, freeze up, or cause the system to crash during file transfers. All file transfers will slow down your computer's operation to various degrees because transferring large audio, video, and image files uses up physical memory, virtual memory and other system resources, and spyware activity can further increase the drain on your system. You may find your computer slowing to a crawl during file sharing, or even locking up.This effect will increase as you continue to download and upload files without giving your computer a break. If your computer attempts to resume incomplete downloads which are no longer available it could add to the load. Delete files which do not readily resume and select the file from another available source. This problem is not with your file sharing program or with your internet provider.
If you open another browser window to use the internet during the download/upload process then expect slow internet response, even on high speed connections. File sharing programs usually assume priority over your available bandwidth and share it between simultaneous downloads/uploads, maintaining connections to servers and users, and displaying banner and popup ads.
Trying to multi-task while transferring files is a sure way to cause problems. Remember that your computer is already 1) Running the file sharing program, 2) Maintaining connections to multiple servers and users, 3) Transferring megabytes of data, at the same time, to and from many sources, 4) Storing all incoming data in separate places, 5) Sending data to different places, 6) Plus maintaining all the other programs and processes besides file sharing that your operating system needs to keep running.
Be kind to your computer and don't make it do other things while sharing files.

  14. a few things to note on that. first nothing is completing when this happens. Everytime so far I've had a few downloads going, none even close to completing when this happens. I know what you mean about it slowing down a good bit while completing. I've seen it several times but its never caused such problems. This problem always seems to occur when I'm away from the PC as well, thus nothing out of the ordinary is happening to put strain on the resources. Edonkey, and few system resources and anti-virus are the only things running at the time. I'll have to check into more thoroughly tonightl. One thing of note that I don't THINK has anything to do with it. Last night my girlfriend's cell-phone went off in my room and I noticed a sort of clicking noise from the tower while the phone was ringing. I'm assuming some sort of interference. it smoothed out as soon as she turned it off and I didn't notice any problems. everthing continued as normal. Then this moring I have these memory problems. Is there anything cell-phone interference can actually damage?

Never heard of a cell phone interfering with a PC's operation. This would be a new one on me. I don't see how it could possibly do anything to cause such things to occur. Has anyone else heard of this?

As far as eMule goes, it will periodically also access the HDD when it completes parts of files, slowing down the system somewhat for a short time, usually just 5 to 15 seconds. This can be changed in the preferences as to how much will be downloaded before being written to disc - go to the files tab and move the slider to increase or decrease the file buffer size. A larger buffer will mean less wear on your drive, but longer write times per access (and slower PC response time), while a smaller buffer will write the data to the drive in smaller chunks, at the expense of more drive wear. But the PC won't have as many slowdowns.

Other than what I've noted, I haven't seen any other adverse effect of running eMule on the PC 24/7. When it's busy writing to disc, I just pause whatever I'm doing for a short time and then continue when it's finished doing it's thing. I've been websurfing and running it at the same time, and even run Nero all the time when eMule is active. No problems. I run eMule Plus, I don't use edonkey and never have. Maybe you should give it a try, could be a problem in edonkey that doesn't show up in eMule.

cell phones CAN interfer with a PC's operation .. it happens all the time , one of the reasons a pc case is so shielded (except for those stupid windows) and thier are fer. beads (chokes) on cable ends

  17. I think the possible cause of freeze may involve Alcohol 120%. I had just installed it not long before sufferin low memory issues. rolled back the system and no problems for a few days. installed it again and memory problems again. I disabled Alcohol's virtual drive and so far no more issues with low memory.
