  1. I know that the majority here are using Toast 6 but I'm not ready to upgrade yet. I'm waiting on Roxio revising Jam first.

I've followed instructions posted by others here as closely as possible--using DVDbackup to archive a copy protected 4.2 GB DVD as well as much smaller non-professional DVD-R, but I seem to get the same results:

Apple's DVD Player says "NOT PERMITTED"
and VLC spews forth the following:
    dvdplay debug: dvdroot=/dev/rdisk1 title=0 chapter=1 angle=1
    dvdplay warning: cannot open /dev/rdisk1
    dvdread debug: dvdroot=/dev/rdisk1 title=1 chapter=1 angle=1

The Video_TS folders are fully playable from the hard drive--so I don't think there should be a reason why "dvdcss cannot open device"

I am using DVD-RWs until I figure this out---please help---I'm ready to bang my head against a wall.

Did you click "New Disc" in the Toast DVD window before dragging in your VIDEO_TS folder? The Toast 5 DVD option in the Other tab is the same as Toast 6's DVD (UDF) option in the Data tab.

The VIDEO_TS folder needs to be first; the AUDIO_TS folder second.

  5. Err, okay that's interesting.... be back in a while.

    Ignore all the banging.....

How can AUDIO_TS be second when TOAST insists on alphabetizing the folders?

  7. I thought it was possible to completely leave off the AUDIO_TS folder and still have a playable DVD. But even when I tried that --NO GO..

Sorry, but it's quitting time--I'll pick this up tomorrow--9 a.m. PST

Oh, so I see about the alphabetical order. My goof. Yes, I've burned DVDs that work without the AUDIO_TS folder but I've heard that it's good to have it for maximum compatibility.

Your directory inside the VIDEO_TS folder doesn't include a VIDEO_TS.VOB file (it should be the third one from the top).

This is mostly likely why its not playing
other than that it looks good

all that stuff about video_ts being before or after audio_ts is nonsense.

Yes, nonsense ... because you'll notice that a split second after you hit the burn button, Toast reorders the folders so that the video_ts folder is on top and the audio_ts folder is on the bottom.

I blew it with that VIDEO_TS folder first thing. But I got the nutty idea from reading the DVD-Vido File System explanation in the dvdrhelp glossary. It says: "The first directory on the disc must be the VIDEO_TS directory containing all the files."

You wonder how this kind of nonsense keeps spreading.

Well you don't HAVE to have a VIDEO_TS.VOB for it to work, but if the original Disc has one, it's a pretty safe bet you need it. I have working DVDs that don't have a VIDEO_TS.VOB file. It's strange that it plays from the HD but not the disc. So, it probably won't help, but why not update to Toast 5.2.3? I'm using 5.2.3 with a Pioneer 105 and haven't had any trouble. Have you tried ripping the disc again or maybe used Yade X? Very shortly you could try the new and improved MTR

Are you sure about this? The original non-professional DVD-R doesn't have "VIDEO_TS.VOB" files but it does have VTS_01_0.VOB and VTS_01_1.VOB files and the original plays alright--but I still can't make a copy. Does Apple DVD Player refuse to look at DVD-RWs?

    PROBLEM NUMBER 2:
The copy protected DVD when read by DVDbackup gives out this message.

"Failed to decrypt video title set 0. Skip it and continue, or stop processing?" I think that why I missing the VIDEO_TS.VOB file for this disc

My problem is I think I have two separate problems combining to give me one huge headache.

My Pioneer 105 and Apple DVD Player plays Memorex DVD-RWs fine. Try ripping the disc with Yade X. For the non-protected one you could just use the 'Copy' mode in Toast. While you're at it, try Zapping the PRAM on the computer.

  16. Well I updated Toast to 5.2.3 but that did no good.

I also zapped the PRAM-- nope that did no good.

So what's this Yade X you speak of?....

Tomorrow I'll reinstall Toast from scratch--but I'm not hopeful.

    Just to reiterate---Dual 1.25 Ghz, OS X 10.2.8, 768 MB, Pioneer DVR-105.
Any firmware updates to the DVR-105 I haven't heard of?

At home I haven't upgraded to DVD burning capability--but I'm beginning to think the new DVD burner will go in the PC and not the Mac.

Did you try to 'Copy' the non-protected disk? If the straight copy didn't work then it has to be something to do with Toast, the burner, or disc type. The only new Firmware out for the 105 is PC only, or the hacker type for region free. I'm still using the original version 1.21. I see you're new here (post count), has this burner ever worked for burning DVDs? Shooting in the dark here, but, I'm guessing the 105 didn't come with the machine, mine didn't. I have mine installed in the upper bay, DVD-ROM in lower bay, both drives set to cable select. I believe this is the preferred arrangement. Just checking you understand

    Yade X is YetAnotherDvdExtractor
Or you could PM WiseWeasel, maybe he'll let you try the new test version of MacTheRipper

  18. TugBoat,

Yep, I tried the "Copy" function with the non-protected disk--but that didn't work.

Nor did it work when I "built" a New DVD and dragged over the Video_TS folder created by DVDbackup. I click on New Folder in Toast to create the empty Audio_TS, right?

I'm using Memorex DVD-RWs--it mounts fine on the desktop and I can see the files.A full erase or a quick erase doesn't seem to make a difference. I'll try a TDK DVD-RW next.

This is the original Pioneer DVR-105 that came with the machine--how do I check the firmware?

Thanks TugBoat for filling me on the software out there.

Yep, I tried the "Copy" function with the non-protected disk--but that didn't work.

Now we're getting somewhere. Try this, insert non-protected disk, open Disk Copy, make an image, burn said image. Does it work? Sorry, but I've always used Toast to burn DVDs so I can't help you with this. I'm using the Green (cased) Memorex 1x-2x DVD-RWs, they work fine for me. I don't know about the Apple Superdrives, there may be an update for them but I haven't heard of any, so, it's not likely there are any. To check out the drive, go to the Apple, About this Mac, More Info..., ATA, Pioneer. Or the System Profiler, I can't remember how Jaguar does it....:P

Sorry you've had such a struggle with this (and have had to deal with my misadvice). I just noticed your first posting where you said DVD Player gives a Not Permitted message. I believe that's because you haven't yet clicked the play arrow (or pushed the space bar). I sometimes need to do that to get the title menu to appear. All the other DVD Player controls (such as menu and title) give me the "Not Permitted" message.

  21. Tugboat,

Man, I can't believe it--I'm having a fit, rolling on the floor....

I used Apple's Disk Copy Utility and still got the dreaded "Not Permitted" message from Apple DVD Player when I hit play.

I swore that leaving Toast out of the mix was going to solve my problems--but NO!

However--strangely if I use the Open Video_TS command it works. Unlike the Toast version which gives me the warning: "There was system error--could not detect valid media file."

I'm using the same Memorex discs as you. System Profiler provides a lot of info--but I don't see anything about what the Firmware version is.

Sorry--but I think I'm checking out for now--maybe some distance away from the computer will make me think of other possibilities--I've also got a thread going over at Roxio--but I don't have much faith in the tech help over there.

    Thanks,
    TIM
