I enjoyed great success capturing televison shows with my ATI TV-Wonder under Windows 98. After I upgraded to Windows 2000 I found the performance dropped quite a bit and I was unable to capture anything without MASSIVE frame drops. Are there any quality programs out there to capture with under Win2k?
How involved would a dual boot setup be to get Win2k and Win98 running? I don't want to lose my current Win2k install. The primary partition is NTFS and I know 98 can't read that.
I miss my hobby!!

If you didn't format your C drive and install W2K fresh, your doomed!!! Upgrading 98 to W2K never, ever works. There are a lot of differences between code for 98 and w2k. More than likely you have bad 98 drivers running, or a 98 version of a program.
W2K is the prefered capturing software. No filesize limits of 98 when using NTFS, and no XP problems(and there are so many). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Aye it was a clean install, I never do anything other.
I have always used Virtual Dub with great results. Should I be using something else in Win2k? I remember something about a wrapper and Virtual Dub... it just didn't work right when I tried to cap with Win2k.
Edit: For the longest time ATI's site simply said to use the software that came with the card. Today I checked for the first time in, LITERALLY, years, and sure enough there are new drivers out! I will try again and let you guys know!
Thanks -
might take a look at virtualvcr - freeware cap app....
Always check helpfiles/instructions before leaping... -
Ok I installed the card with the new drivers. Appears to be working ok EXCEPT...
I reboot, launch Virtual VCR and everything is good. If I exit VVCR and re-open it, I lose audio. I tried with Virtual DUb aswell and same thing. I have to reboot to get audio back...
Also, both VVCR and VDub won't let me change the reso above 320x240. I know my TV Wonder isn't the greatest card but I also know it is capable of higher reso's then that... I've capped at 640x480 in the past...
Any suggestions on either problem?
Thanks -
Install service pack 4
Do the registry hacks virtualdub site suggest to w2k users
Update the capture drivers
Capture only from video - in (cvs/svideo). Tuners always have issues with w2k on all cards. The audio is on line in
When you capture, try preview mode - not overlay - to see if you have better results.
Since you have ATI, visit lordsnumf 's site... He has to change his name to LordATI or something... -
SP4 - Done
Only video is a no go, the whole idea is to record tv shows.
Got the latest drivers from ATI yesterday and installed em
Only using Preview, not overlay.
I will try the VDub hacks but I think I remember trying them in the past without success.
I will also check out LordSmurfs site asap!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!. I think I'll end up dual booting 98SE if I can't get this working today.. It worked flawlessly for me for 100+ episodes of Seinfeld in the past. The file size limit is not an issue since VDub can cap to multiple files and does it well. -
VirtualDub uses VFW drivers, while W2K only uses WMV drivers (not sure about the proper abbrevs). You will need to use a VFM to WMV wrapper to cap using VFW programs.
Sometimes, programs offer both driver formats. IFAIK, VirtualDub only has VFW capability.ICBM target coordinates:

Virtual Dub capping is purely a 98 experience. W2K and XP are WMV platforms, whereas VDUB is VFW only. The WMV Wrapper sorta works for me, and sorta doesn't. I've never had great luck getting VDUB to capture well. I use IUVCR with no problems (virtual VCR never worked right). I also use Power VCR with no problems.
Again, it boils down to capture drivers. I can't use the BTWIN chipset drivers, they lock me into PAL. The OEM drivers for my card work fine. You absolutely 100% have to make sure you don't install the wrong drivers. I had to manually remove the BTWIN chipset drivers, un-installing them didn't remove them, just the device. And since the date was newere than OEM drivers, they never get updated when i change drivers. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Dual boot is done! Thanks to Partition Magic and Boot Magic!
Twas easier then I thought. The 4 cds I used to Ghost the 2k install were overkill :P
Can't wait to start capping again!!
Woohoo
