I tried opening a file into virtual dub and I ran into this error. It said...

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)

It went on to say something about virtual dub requiring a video for windows codec that supports direct show. Anyone know what I can do to fix this? I am running version 1.4.7 of virtual dub btw. Thanks

You need the divx 5 codec, Gspot will test your files and tell the required codecs.

I actually have the divx 5 codec installed as well as ffdshow, xvid, ac3 filters, and a few other stuff. Do I need to load them into virtual dub or something? The video itself plays fine on windows media player though

Yes. It changes the tag in the AVI that tells the software what codec to use. Here.
