I have a Dell inspiron 5100 laptop and a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N Slim DVD player inside it. Whenever I try to play a burned dvd on my laptop it freezes after a few minutes of playing. This doesn't happen on the DVD player in my brother's tower or in our stand-alone player. I tried asking Dell and of course they have no idea. Please help me.

well that still doent mean that yo ahve to post it many times. just post it in the most correct forum ad it will get answered in a day or two.
anyway, does this problem happen if you play it on a standalone player? if not, the problem is with your laptop. try another software, like windows media player, or update the software you have.

It does work on my stand-alone as I said in my first post, and I updated my software and I tried, WinDVD, PowerDVD and Windows Media Player.

what brand of disks are the movies burned on?
are the disks r-, r+, rw?
are those type of disks compatible with your dvd-rom drive?
have you checked dell website for new firmware upgrades for your dvd-rom drive?
have you checked the dvd-rom manufacturing website to see if they have a knowledge base you can check?
can your dvd-rom drive read normal commercially made dvd's?
do you have the most updated drivers for your dvd-rom drive/ide controller?
is your dvd rom drive set to pio/dma?
how does it not play? are you able to rip the dvd to your hd and play the movie from your hd? are there scratches on the disk?
a little bit more info would be helpful.
