Rather than experimenting and locking up my DVD drive, I hoped someone here could explain how the region code on an RPC-2 drive works when ripping out of region DVDs. I understand you have 5 chances to change the code before it locks and I understand there are programs out there to change this (by tricking the drive and by flashing its firmware - would prefer to avoid the latter).

I am in R1 and have a Pioneer A105 burner (also used to rip). I have previously installed the DVD Region Free program, but it seems to cause problems burning discs when it is installed (hence it is uninstalled at the moment).

If I use DVDXCOPY to back up a R2 disc will my DVD drive use one of the 5 region code changes?

If I use DVDShrink 3.0.5beta or DVDecryptor to rip a R2 or R3 disc and then burn a region-free disc with Nero (if that is possible), will that use one of the five region code changes?

Will playing R0 discs change the region code counter??

Thanks in advance for your help!

  2. will your dvd rom drive read other region disks?

if so, you can usually rip the dvd to your hd taking off the region codes using dvd decrypter or dvdshrink. this allows you to burn the files without region codes.

if not, then you'll have to find firmware that eliminates the region code restrictions for your dvd-rom drive.

My dvd-rom will read other region discs, but only 5 times before it locks. So I don't want to do a trial and error experiment. I have tried software to override this but it seems to screw up my ability to burn so that is not the preferred option.

My question remains whether the region code counter on a RPC-2 drive is affected only when it plays an out of region disc, or whether the region code counter is affected even when it rips an out of region disc.

On my Pioneer 106 and Pioneer DV115 drives, both RPC2, they can rip any region discs without effecting either drives counter. Unless I run AnyDVD I cannot watch the discs on the pc.
Just do a test yourself. If you don't change the region code of your drive manually it won't change on its own.
