Its been awhile since I visited last and I see that there are some new DVD decoding/ripping apps. What is your favorite? Its pros and cons?
I am still using DVDBackUp and occasionally get errors in Panther so I am looking for something that has been updated recently.
Also, if anyone wants to email me (mactraderboy at mac dot com) some of the good apps I will be happy to host them on my iDisk which is at http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=mactraderboy&templa...cty=US&lang=en That way they will all be in one place.

Yade X is currently my favourite extractor. It has the ability to preview each chapter/menu/image and allows you to demux into .m2v/.ac3 streams, it also removes the RCE protection.

demuxing is short for demultiplexing, separating the audio and video into their own files
rce is region code enhancement, designed to add another level of copy protection to dvd's, mostly region 1 dvd's ... removing css and macrovision is what dvd rippers do ... yadex reportedly removes region code enhancement also -

The VOB or MPG file contains all the various files used in the "movie" - the video, audio, subtitles, other language tracks, etc. These various files are all "multiplexed" ( inter-leaved, combined ) into a sequential file the DVD-player can read from the disk. To do any editing, or remove the "fluff" to save space, these files need to be separated => de-multiplexed.
RCE is something like "Region Code Enhanced". It is in addition to Region Coding - which is added to the DVD to prevent playing it in a different region of the world from that in which it was originally sold. Designed to allows the movie studios to sell regional or "overseas' rights to distribute a movie on DVD - while preventing the distributors from selling DVDs into another distributor's "turf" (bought and paid-for).
Region encoding is included on the DVD, and is recognized by the DVD-player. The RCE adds a second "flag" (?) to the format, in an attempt to make it harder to bypass the RC. Apparently, it is mainly used on Region 1 (USA? North Amercia?) discs. Movies are not released at the same time, throughout the world. No one would buy distribution rights for a region if DVDs from another, earlier-released region, were freely-available. Ah, capitalism! - it's all about the money.
On a side note, you should "carefully consider" hosting software which could place you in violation of the DMCA. See some of WiseWeasel's threads on the Hades and MacTheKnife rippers. Sometimes, when somebody hasn't taken an "obvious" step - there is a very good reason.
