  1. Capturing VHS to AVI using VirtualVCR 704x480 using huffuv..

    Option A
    1. dynamic noice reduction MMX - Steven Don and Avery Lee ( setting of 8)
    2. 2D Cleaner - Jim Casaburi - (setting of 6-10 threshold and 2 for X + Y - interlaced video selected)
    3. Sharpen filter - internal (setting of 6-8)
    4. Grayscale (internal) if b&w video


    Option B
    1. deinterlace (mode: unfold) (internal filter)
    2. smart smoother hiq

    On my Athlon 1800 and Windows 2000 Option B takes twice to three times longer then A, but I think the results are better for color VHS.
    For b&w VHS both appear to be close.

    What are others using ? I would like to have the performace of A but the output of B for color VHS tapes....

    No offense to anyone, but I would prefer not to use AVIsynth..However I've heard of fantastic results using a filter named peachsmooth for AVIsynth....

    I've also used the noise filter in Tmpgenc and was quite impressed with the output but it was slower then Optiion B. Output was similar....

    When I transferred my VHS collection to DVD I did the following:

    Captured via DV using a JVC HR-DVS2U (740x480)
    2D Cleaner
    Temporal Cleaner
    Resized to 352x480

    I don't recall the settings on the 2D and Temporal filters other than I upped the settings when transferring cartoons and lowered them for live action.

    When the kids are watching some of the transferred movies I can't tell whether I bought them orginially as a VHS tape or DVD. Of course under close inspection the resolution will generally give the VHS transfers away.

    It depends the source...

    some examples:

    Capture 704 x 576

    Sharpen ( 8 )
    Resize (lanczos 352 x 576)

    This is OK for most of the material. (PAL source, I can't speak for NTSC)

    Resize (lanczos 352 x 576)

    This is of SECAM captures. Sometimes you need also to low the chroma value (85% of the original), so not to have this "red" on the picture

    This is for PAL and looks better on cartoons. Also is better for old tapes recorded from analogue satellite channels

    Amazing results but the motion is a little bit "dreamy" at times

    Now I'm investigating some other filter settings, based on frame merger. It is an amazing filter for VHS tapes with Tracking problems. The only one that elimate much of the noise!

    It is also a good general purpose filter at a setting of 1-seems to improve most encodings.

    This filter de-interlace, so it is a good general purpose filter only if your source is progressive (or NTSC Film).
    There is of course a way to make it work with interlace material without de-interlace the source, but makes the proccess slow. A faster -and only a bit less good- alternative for generall purpose filtering, is the so well known Dynamic Reduction Filter....

  8. I've also been using the Smart Smoother High Quality by Klaus Post... seems to work very well for cartoon (average mode, with diff, radius 7-9 threshold 10-20 maintain 5-15) and I've also been using it for live action (weighted w/ diff, radius 5-7 threshold 10-20 amount 254 maintain 5-15).

    But I'm going to have to try out some of the other filters mentioned here.

    Effect on cartoon using the Smart Smoother HiQ filter:
    raw image
    radius 9 threshold 25 average no-differencing
    (note: threshold 25 was a touch too high, threshold 15 would've been sharper)
