  1. I have a DivX file that has 5.1 AC3 audio and SUB and IDX files for subtitles. I have never dealt with DivX files like this and don't know where to begin to convert this to either VOB or MPEG-2 files.

I used Virtual Dub to extract the audio and video and am using TMPGEnc to convert from AVI to MPEG-2. Now, what do I do with the subtitle files? The audio is Cantonese so I have to have the subs.

I thought I could use SubRip to convert the SUB files to SRT files, but I get an error message "unsupported file format".

    Thanks.

  2. you should be able to demux the subs using virtualdub. check the stream list. select the sub stream and choose demux.

convert the idx file to srt or sub using subrip.
use vobsub to permanently add the subs to your avi file.
convert the avi file using tmpgenc
load audio and video into dvd authoring program
    burn authored files to dvd.

  3. Thanks dafreak! You pointed me in the right direction. I installed Vobsub and changed the priority of the Directshow filter in TMPGEnc. So now my MPEG-2 files will have permanent subs.

If you want "real" DVD subs (selectable), you can use sub2sup, and then author with IfoEdit.
