Is it a mpeg 1 or 2 file, what type of sound does it have, did you try demuxing the mpeg file first? Just need some more info.

Toast Titanium 6 may currently provide the easiest way to convert MPEG to DV. Select Toast's Video tab, add the *.mpg or *.vob files, select the files in the list, choose Disc/Export Video... and Toast converts them with audio to DV streams. The converted files may even be on the (X)SVCD or DVD disk so no ripping is needed. I learned this from the iMovie discussion list and I don't know whether the QT MPEG2 Playback Component is needed.
But if you need the MPEG for DVDSP, why convert it to DV, then back to MPEG? Can't you just tweak the MPEG so it is DVD compatible? -
I'm having a similiar problem. I would like to create DVD(s) of clips I imported from my digital camcorder and clips from my old analog camcorder on iMovie. The digital clips are in iMovie fine. I have EyeTV and I connected my old analog camcoder to download VCD quality .mpeg files to my HD.
iMove won't accept the .mpeg files. iDVD nor DVDSP accepts them either. I used QT Pro to export the .mpeg to .mov. The video looked fine but no audio. After looking at some of the posts in this forum, I tried QT Pro to export the file to .dv. No sound again.
I then used Galactic's instructions to create a DVD image file and that worked fine. But I don't want a standalone DVD image, I would like to take the .mpeg video file and edit it with my other clips on iMovie.
I am now trying havema-1's suggestion of using Toast 6 to export the .mpeg to a .dv file. But I'm not sure I can import this to iMovie.
Any suggestions? Thanks. -
If the Toast export also doesn't do it, MPEG2 Works comes with an application titled ExportToDV. It requires QT Pro and the QT MPEG component. It first demuxes the video and audio (saving audio as .wav/.aif), then uses QT Pro to export the video to DV, then uses QT Pro to add the audio to the video, then asks you to save the file as a self-contained movie.

Thanks for the suggestion Frobozz. The Toast approach worked but I got a file that is 8.54GB. Now I'm trying to break this down so I can edit it.
I tried using ExporttoDV but there was no sound.
I'm going to start a new threat and ask about why there needs to be such a large .dv file for a 43 min video. -
One could do two exports from QTPro. One as a DV file, and one as an audio (AIFF?) file. Then Copy the audio and paste it (Add Scaled) into the DV footage and export it to a new DV file.
I notice YADE, which I used for the first time recently creates two files when extracting from a DVD. One is the Ac3 audio, the other an mpeg2 video file. I had no problem syncing them in QT Pro (with the mpeg plug in). I'm not sure YADe would work in this situation, but it might.

You can break the exported DV files to smaller <2G segments iMovie can import with these handy AppleScripts:

DV is compressed 5:1 so DV files are actually quite small with only 13G/hour... -
