  1. I hope this is the right forum, sorry if it isn't.

What I'm doing is transferring my old VHS tapes. Most I will be converting to Xvid files and a few to DVD. I bought an ADS DVD Xpress and have been capturing at the highest setting (mpeg2), then I run it through correction filters in Virtual Dub. The problem is it takes over two days!! I was wondering, if I returned this device and bought the ADS PYRO A/V Link or some other device that can capture to DV and ran the DV file with the filters through Virtual Dub, would the process be quicker? My guess is Mpeg2 files are more complex, thats why it takes so long. A DV file is simpler so it should move faster. Is that right?

My other question is this: Other than cropping and resizing I am trying to use Virtual Dub as a sort of TBC with different filters. If I bought a standalone, would I get better results as well as save more time?

Two days just seems like an awful long time to encode a 90 minute video. TIA for your help.

  2. Here's one recipe:

    Hw/sw:
    canopus advc-100 $300
    ScenalyzerLive $30
    PicVideo codec $30
    TMPGEnc Plus $50
    TMPG DVD Author $68
    2nd 160 gig HD $150

    Total $630

    process time per tape:

    Capture 2 hrs
    prep/edit 30 min avg
    encode 9 hrs - 2 pass vbr
    prep/author 30 min
    burn/check 30 min

    Total 12 1/2 hrs

Given a p4 1.5 ghz computer with xp and a decent burner , above will give you consistent results.
Ain't the best, certainly ain't the cheapest. But this info can give you some sort of benchmark to compare with other options.

How about Datavideo DAC-100 (180 USD) with Mainconcept 1.4 encoder... On a 2 Ghz PC encoding is in realtime.
