    I followed the following guide to convert a VCD to an .mpg file:

    However, it doesn not allow me to save to filename.mpg. Rather, a "Browse Folders" box pops up for me to pick where I want it saved but it saves it as a dat file which is quite useless to me.

    Any help on this issue would be muchly appreciated.

    Cant you change the file name in the display box where its going to be saved?I do this all the time and it saves as mpg and not dat.

    If you saved the files as described then after its saved then rename it to mpg.
