  1. I have spent a few years with Photoshop, Qimage, film and flat scanners, and digital cameras. My resulting prints are much better than One Hour Photo. I have printed several 100s of images covering the last 80 years of family history. When I started my digital darkroom, I knew it was possible to improve on "standard" processing without using commercial equipment.

I am new to video processing, but I don't know is what to expect for quality. Assuming I use good capture like Canopus 100, good mpeg2 conversion, good authoring, and burning (nero running Plextor 708AB) can I expect to convert my VHS tapes to DVD without a significant loss in quality? I have tried ATI Worder 8500, and Nero 6 Delux. The results are not at all close to a VHS tape played back on the same TV that also services the DVD player outputing the best a new VHS player,ATI, Nero, and Plextor can do.

I would appreciate book or paper references on video quality or informed opinion.

If done correctly, you should be able to produce a VHS to DVD conversion with minimal loss of quality. Describe exactly how you attempted the entire process. It's impossible to determine where you went wrong without detailed information. What capture settings did you use such as format, resolution, and bitrate? How did you convert your captured file to DVD? Did you use a dedicated mpeg-2 encoder to convert your capture or just Nero?
