I'm using Nero 5.5 to write on Packard Bell +RW disks [recorder: _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A (Target 1, D: ): Autoinsert On, DMA On, Disconnect On, SyncDataXfer Off] and I'm finding a consistent problem.
The write process appears to succeed but at the very end (when all buffers have emptied) Nero pauses for a long time and then reports a "write fail". The disk appears to be readable, though, and is recognised by PowerDVD as a DVD-Video.
The relevant bit of the Nero log says:

I've also tried using DVD-Lab, and a similar error occurs at the same place - a Windows "blue screen" ejects the media and tells me it's unreadable..
Is there anyone who can tell me what's happening here, and if it's important, and how I can stop it?
Many thanks..

exactly how big is the set of files you are burning? If you push the capacity too close you may be running out of room on the disc to write the lead-out. cheaper media is infamous for having problems close to the edges.
-
Various sizes - max 4.61Gb - but sometimes quite small. But I am "re-writing" and it may be that the failures on small sets are occuring where that disk has previously failed on a big one. [I don't know how this lead-out process works, so that last statement may not be logical !]
You imply some confidence that it's a media problem, not a driver or hardware problem though?
I'll test this out.. Thanks .. -
4.61GB is too large to burn properly. the max you should have I believe is around the 4.4 area. try buring one that is 4GB or less and see if the problem persists. if it works fine then it's likely a problem with burning too close to the edge.

I've just successfully burnt my 4.61Gb on a Verbatim +R disk - Nero gave no error, and PowerDVD plays it perfectly - including navigating all chapter links..
There's obviously more serendipity in all this interaction than I thought.. So I'm not sure whether my problem was the cheap Packard Bell disks, or whether I should steer clear of all +RW disks..
[And of course what DVD-Lab shows as 4.61Gb does appear in Nero as about 4.4Gb (I'm not sure what definition of Gb you're using.)]
Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction - it looks like my cheap NEC drive will work OK with the right disks. -
yep sounds like it was a media problem. I have and NEC drive and never had issues with it. I've used Sony, Verbatim, and Riteks on it with no media issues.
