Getting a 2-hour 8mm Tape onto my Hard Drive right now using Windows Movie Maker in DV-AVI (which I believe is Type-1). I know about using programs like TMPGEnc to transcode the DV-AVI to MPEG-2 and ffmpeggui to change the audio to AC3, what what is the best order for editing, transcoding, etc.? This is only me second attempt at this, so forgive me if anything I said above was wrong![]()

Yeah, I see your point, lol. Let me rephrase what I said...
After I have captured the Type 1 DV-AVI, in what order should I extract the audio and convert it to AC3, convert the video to Type 2 (needed for TMPGENC from what I've read), change the AVI into MPEG-2, combine the AC3 audio with the video, etc. -
I don't suppose it really matters unless you are going to edit parts of your source out. If you are editing stuff out, then do all your editing first and then strip the audio from whatever your outputted file to be encoded to mpeg is going to be, then have your encoder output just the video stream that you can later mux with your converted audio stream.

Ok, that's what I figured but I just wanted to make sure. I am trimming the start and end of the clips (getting rid of the gray screens), so I figured that the editing probably needed to be done before any splitting of streams.

I think most editing programs (such as VirtualDub) only work with DV type 2 so you might have to re-capture/re-transfer it.

Didn't see anything regard this in the Convert section....do you happen to know of any programs that can either capture directly to Type 2 or can handle the conversion process?
-
This may be a stupid question, but did you try it?
I have the latest TMPGenc Plus and have had no problems reading in AVI captured from Windows Movie Maker 2. -
Canopus DV Converter can change Type 1 to Type 2, then most programs will accept it.

basstrap: Yes, I did and I got an error about not having the right codec or something like that...
redwudz: Thanks, I'll get that right now. -
This is what I do:
==============================
1) Open Windows Movie Maker 2 (or Premiere)
2) Capture via Firewire
3) Edit in WMM2. Save as Avi.
4) Convert Avi (Sony) into Avi (Canopus) using Canopus DV File Converter (b/c Virtualdub Mod doesn't recognize Sony's Avi)
5) Extract audo using Virtrual Dub Mod. Save as Wav.
6) Convert Wav into AC3 using ffmpeggui
7) Convert Avi (Canopus) into Mpeg2 using TMPGEnc
8.) Open TMPGEnc Author. Combine Mpeg2 and AC3 together. Author into vob file.
9) Burn w/ Nero -
I wonder why it works for me?
I capture using my Sony digital video camera's passthrough and WMM. I can read the AVI directly into TMPGenc Plus. (I can't, however, read it into VirtualDub.)
Is it possible that because I have installed trials of other packages that WMM is using a different codec even though I didn't specify for it to do so? -
jimmyjojo: Thanks for those steps. I just have the editing to do in between 4 and 5, but aside from that those should work for me exactly.
basstrap: Hmmmm....possibly, even though I thought WMM would always use Microsoft's codec.
