I said I would post this problem in here for someone who is having problems burning DVD's,
so here goes... any help appreciated :-
Bought the computer new last May its an Advent 3316, 3.06GHz, windoze XP home, but only had a cd writer on so I bought a Philips DVD+R/RW drive to go with it. The drive was fitted and the software that came with it was Nero basic package.
I downloaded some films from kazaa but as I said they are ones that are out legally on dvd/video and so the quality is really good. Also now got Nero 6 (which I believe is installed?)
I am directed to use NeroVision Express 2 to burn the film. After following instructions to obtain the film from the folder it is in I press the 'burn' button. It says it is "creating menus and transcoding" and this process takes 3 hrs 45 minutes (is that right, seems so long to me?). The film is approx 100 minutes long. Then I am asked to insert a disc in. I am using the free Philips DVD+RW disc which came with the drive. It is 120 minutes or 4.7GB. As it came with the drive it should be completely compatible BUT a minute after I insert it, it comes back out with a box saying:
"There is not enough space to burn this compilation to this disc. Please insert another disc that has enough space" Also it says "NOTE: you will not need to transcode again if you cancel the recording now unless you change the project data afterwards"
So I just press the 'cancel' button - what else can I do?
I just tried to burn half a film called Oceans Eleven. Think its less than an hour in length and after it did the 'transcoding' bit I put the same dvd in and it ejected it saying:
"Burn process failed" An error log was created do you wish to save it" I have the error log, its quite big... the only bit I can see with errors is :-

Could also the problem be linked to using a DVDRW disc? Also, personally, I use GearPro Professional for doing CDRW, and this has a DVD option... think she'd be better using that than nero?
Please read the rules on this forum -- NO warez... next time you get a warning -- thank you for your cooperation - bjm

OK guys, thanks for the responses.
I agree, maybe she shouldn't be doing what she is... I wouldn't know, I don't own a DVD (player or rewriter). I'm happy to stick with VCR and dolby pro-logic
Personally, having looked at the problems on here I think I am still making the right choice there!
I didn't get her into this mess though, someone else did... I was merely trying to see if I could help her out of it via posting on some forums. I couldn't personally give a flying fig as, like you say, its not my problem, and looking at your replies, its not yours either!! :P
Thanks again.

Suggest your friend try burning some simple data files and see if that creates a valid disk.
Next, she needs to do some research so that she would learn that of all the encoders out there, Nero is quite possibly the worst available.
Then would be a DVD rip to test with files known to be valid video.
She is starting with a file with a high probability of being garbage, using an encoder of low quality, and brand-new hardware which may not be installed correctly. ISOLATE and IDENTIFY.
