Two observations about the Philips DVDR75....

Just got it yesterday, upgraded the firmware, and have noticed a few things which perplex me.....

1. I'm new to this, but I guess I can delete tracks on a DVD+R disk? I thought once they were burned on that was it.....I guess I was wrong.

2. I'm trying to finalize +R disks that were made on a different recorder and keep being told there is something wrong with the data on the disk, to press OK to open the tray, but the instructions in the manual say to run through a procedure in the setup menu that doesn't exist.

3. I played a finalized +R disk yesterday prior to upgrading the firmware, then after doing the upgrade that particular disk gives me a DISK ERROR message and will not play.


4. Finalized -R disks are just spit right back out when attempted to be loaded.


Anyone else have any related issues?

Space on disc is gone. By deleting track you just changed "menu" which is not pointing to burned space anymore.

Finalizing a disk made in a different recorder is problematic, in that each manufacturer has proprietary technology in their machine.
Phillips can only finalize a disk made in a Phillips, and so forth.

I am curious...How do you upgrade firmware in a stand alone desktop DVD recorder?

Given that it's not working so well, since you did that....I don't know I want to try it, until you work out the bugs.

The other disks you mentioned, particularly -R, are not compatible with newer machines, acccording to Phillips tech support...I had the same issue.

I've had no issues with the DVDR75 playing back -R discs produced on the Panasonic E20. I'm using good brand named discs on the E20. I'll try out some of my older -R 'no-name' branded dsics on the 75 and post a result on those.

like asichter, my 75 will play -R's recorded from a Panny (E50 i think) no problem.

Why did you upgrade the f/ware, was the problem there before?

I'm a big advocate of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy. If the machine does all you need, then why upgrade f/ware......do it if you need it, but remember, there's always a risk associated with firmware upgrades.

Can you downgrade back to the original firmware?

I have since returned the Philips DVDR75, but I did get a chance to test some of my older no-name brand -R discs recorded on the Panny E20 They all played fine except for one shich I had put a label on. It froze every now & then from about half way through. The same disc though played fine on the Panny E20, E50, S35 & my Teac player. Could have had something to do with the label.
