I've included an image captured from a DVD via the Canopus ADVC-100. This frame was selected from the uncompressed AVI stream using VirtualDub.

I've blown it up to show the cross-hatching effect that is bothering me.

The connection to the ADVC is SVideo, and from the Canopus to the PC is via Firewire, of course. The Canopus box is set to all the default settings. I'm in NTSC-Land...

All my other video sources (SVideo from Digital Cable box, SVHS deck, Laserdisc player) to the Canopus exhibit the same crosshatching, especially on bright scenes.

Another thread spoke of similar issues, I think, but there was no final solution (if one even exists) and no example was posted. The recommendations revolved around interlacing (which I don't think is the case), and recommended using short, fat, well-shielded cables (which I am). Does this look like interference? The pattern doesn't seem to shift or change like typical interference does.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Here is essentially the same frame captured with DV Passthrough on a Sony DV Camcorder:

Obviously, there are differences in the way the edges are handled, but the overall crosshatching is gone.

Well, after trying new cables, different firewire card, different firewire cable, different computer, different power connector, and even physically isolating the unit away from the computers, nothing changed. The crosshatching remains.

    BUT...

If I use the composite input on the canopus instead of the S-Video connector, the crosshatching is gone.

This is the same frame, captured with the canopus ADVC-100 with the composite video input used instead of s-video.

    sigh...

  4. I have an ADVC-100, I do not have this issue. I even looked for it after your post.

Just out of curiosity some questions for you:

are you connecting the s-video from eash device directly to the ADVC-100, or going through some type of switching device, like an A/V reciever?

Which s-video input were you using? Front or rear?

Which composite input did you use that fixed the problem? Front or rear?

  5. I would hurry up and return it during the first 30 days if it is a new unit.

    MRacer -

I'm using the front panel SVideo connector to get these bad results. Likewise, the front panel Composite input produces good results (!).

When I get home from work today, I'll try the rear panel connections, just for kicks.

I have the source directly connected to the canopus -- no devices in between.

Deguthrie - It is still in warranty, but has been more than 30 days

I've written a request to Canopus tech support about this. Maybe I just have a bad unit and can get it swapped out under warranty.
